Parliament Excursion

As you already know, the Year 6 students will be attending Parliament and Captain Cook's Cottage as part of our inquiry unit. The students will be attending over two days.

Friday 6th June - 6GS, 6PA and half of 6GP

Wednesday 11th June - 6KN, 6PS and half of 6GP

Important excursion reminders:

  • Students will be required to meet at Mitcham Station at 8:30 AM, where they will leave with their peers, and be picked up at 3:45 PM by a parent or carer.
  • If you have an alternate arrangement or someone else picking up your child, you must notify your classroom teacher.
  • The students do not require money or a myki, just a packed lunch and water bottle in a small bag along with their full VPS uniform.
  • Please check the weather forecast and ensure your child brings an appropriate water proof jacket in the event of inclement conditions.
  • We also ask that students do not bring knives or forks with which to eat their lunch. Bags are scanned upon entry to parliament and these items will not be allowed inside.

Mobile Phones

This is a friendly reminder that while students are permitted to bring mobile phones to school, they must be switched off and securely stored in the tubs provided in the learning centre upon arrival each morning. Phones are not to be used in the morning when they arrive at school.

There is also a growing number of students using smart watches to contact people. If you need to contact your child during school hours, please do so via the school office.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Numeracy

The students consolidated their knowledge on Cartesian planes and quadrants this fortnight. They used coordinates to accurately plot an image. Take a look at what the students plotted!

Writing

This fortnight, the students planned and produced their persuasive pieces. The focus was for them to make it more engaging for the reader by using data and statistics.  Have a look at some of their writing below, and some plans they put together this week when choosing their topic of choice.

Inquiry investigations

Year 6 students have been enjoying their Inquiry topic on Australian government and the parliamentary system. Over the last few weeks, classrooms have been transformed into the lower house of parliament, with students each assuming the role of a sitting MP. This allowed each class to conduct parliamentary debates over mock bills. We look forward to further investigating these concepts on our upcoming excursion visits to state parliament.

NAIDOC Week

As part of NAIDOC Week, our students explored the history and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through powerful discussions, historical sources, and stories from the Stolen Generations, students reflected on the difference between equality and equity and learned about the significance of the 1967 Referendum. This important learning encourages respect, truth-telling, and recognition of First Nations voices—past and present.

Ski Camp Information Morning

On Thursday, the 12th of June, from 8-9 am. All families who have children attending Ski Camp must attend a meeting in the Learning Centre with Mr Wastie.
