On Wednesday GIHS played Tamworth High in round two of the University Shield.
After an effective warm up from both squads both teams came out ready to play.
Tamworth were fit and mobile and immediately tested the Glen side in defence running into spaces with great leg drive. The game went through many sets with few breaks or mistakes. Glen scrambled well in defence and then pressed hard on the Tamworth try line. An unlucky obstruction tight on the line and an attempted grounding by a Glen player onto the foot of a Tamworth defender saw scoring opportunities slip away. As we often see in footy Tamworth then scored several tries in quick succession. Glen was down 16- 6 at half time.
Glen came out rejuvenated in the second half which saw scores level at 16 all midway through the second half. Again the game momentum changed with two final quick tries to Tamworth who went onto take the game 26- 16. The game was very physical but clean. Both squads gave away few penalties and played with true spirit. Ultimately, Tamworth probably ran with more intent and stuck slightly better in their tackles.
For Glen:- 1. Carter Swaffer-Moore and Will Cupitt played with great commitment
2. Rex Watson - outstanding second half breaking tackles with his power running game.
3. Lachlan Cameron.. tireless in defence and attack. Phenomenal work rate.
Thanks to Steve McAllister and Ali Crossley for their critical roles on the day.

Last Monday the GIHS Buckley Shield squad played in the Northern Gala Day which involved Tenterfield High, Guyra, Armidale Secondary College and Tamworth High.
Glen opened up the day with a tough win over Guyra. The Young Spuds were physical and ran with great intent. Glen’s game contrasted with excellent ball movement and some excellent scrambling defence.
In the second game GIHS played ASC. Again Glen used the ball well and went out to an early lead. ASC had a very mobile front row which saw a late scoring opportunity arise to seen the game drawn. By this stage Glen had endured a couple of tough games and numbers of healthy players had started to slide.
Again, Tamworth were a larger squad and the bruises of the early games caught up with Glen seeing Tamworth run out convincing winners.
The points went to:
1 . Aaron Lightfoot- strong and reliable all day.
2. Charlie Templeton- excellent defence now becoming a damaging ball runner
3. Mav Burgess - many excellent carries and long range tries / great cover defence from the inside.
The Glen side was hampered by lower numbers on the day, some sickness in the squad and a few injuries. Some players were also unavailable due to being unable to satisfy school based responsibilities. With a full squad the outcome of the day may have been more complete.
Thanks to Kim Biddle for offering her support on the day.
