Year 1

Belly Breathing Artwork

The Year 1 students have been talking about different strategies that they can use to ‘calm down’ when they are feeling big emotions. One of those strategies is ‘Belly Breathing’. The children practised the strategy of Belly Breathing by slowly breathing out and breathing while holding their stomach. Then they created an artwork to reflect this concept, with the direction and shape of their line changing as they practised the belly breathing. The artworks were all very different and unique!

Emotions and colour artwork

These artworks are inspired by the picture story book ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas. The Year 1 children have been exploring and discussing how colours can often be linked to an emotion. They used water colour paints to create circular shapes and then used black markers to draw faces on the coloured dots to represent the emotion they felt the colour reflected.

Minibeast Habitat Artworks

The children worked together in small groups to create minibeast garden/habitat artworks. It was wonderful to see the children use their skills of collaboration, communication, negotiation and patience, as they worked together to create some incredible artworks that they were proud of.

Minibeast Scavenger Hunt

This term the Year 1 students are learning all about minibeasts. They are thoroughly enjoying learning new facts every week about insects they are familiar with and those they had never heard about before. They enjoyed walking around the school on a Minibeast Scavenger Hunt. Lots of minibeasts were spotted, even spider webs!

The joy of bubbles!

A beautiful afternoon for all the Year 1 students to come together and enjoy the simple joy of blowing, chasing, and popping bubbles together in the Autumn afternoon sunshine.

Visit from the Police

The Year 1 students had a visit from Leading Senior Constable Heath Williams. The students were very excited to ask him some questions that they had written down and hear about why he wanted to be a police officer. He spoke about the various police units, the importance of 000 and even let them hold his hand cuffs. A fantastic experience for the Year 1 students!

Marvellous Minibeasts!

On Wednesday 11 June the Year 1 students will take part in the Marvellous Minibeasts incursion. This will be a wonderful hands-on experience for the students to delve deeper into their Integrated unit of 'Minibeasts'. Each Year 1 class will take part in their own individual session. Each class will be involved in a minibeast role-play, minibeast features and adaptations, butterfly and other minibeast feeding and handling and a bug examination with microscopes.

The event notice has been published in Compass. Consent and payment are due now and not later than Monday 9 June.

We also have a Minibeast Day coming up on Tuesday 24 June - more details soon!
