This term the Year 6s have been exploring the novel Us Mob Walawurru which is a historical fiction novel written in two parts. It follows the life of Ruby, the narrator, from when she is a young girl in school in the 1960s in Central Australia, up until when she becomes a mother herself. Through this novel study, students explored the 1967 Referendum, the Central Land Council, and Native Title. These important topics supported a better understanding of the history and experiences of Australia’s First Nations peoples, and why it is important to recognise and respect the Traditional Custodians of the land where we live and learn.
The students explored informational texts alongside the novel study with a focus on factual recounts. They developed their skills at a sentence level targeting the following:
Students were also explicitly guided through the structure of writing these texts focusing on writing introductions, body parts and conclusion using their sentence level knowedge to demonstrate competencies. Here are some factual recounts from our Year 6 students which reflect that knowledge and understanding.
