Seed of the week: Bok Choy, also known as pak choy is a kind of Chinese cabbage. It has leafy green leaves and is related to the cabbage family. It has been used as a food source for over 1500 years. Unlike cabbage it doesn’t grow a head, however it develops a thick white stalk and broad green leaves. They are ideal for a quick stir fry with a small bit of mince garlic and chili (if you like a hit of flavour).
Bok Choy is an abundant source of vitamin A, B6, C and K. Also, vital minerals such as calcium, iron and potassium. There is a limit of three seeds per day per student, however if you would like more, just ask again the next day. Seeds are limited so act early, so you don’t miss out.
I gave my sweet potatoes to Mum, and she steamed them, she also paned fried them. Both had a distinct sweetness with the texture of a firm pumpkin or carrot. I ate the skin too, which contains much of the valuable nutrients from the sweet potato.
Mrs Cavallaro’s Mother-in-Law made a quiche. I was very fortunate to try some. Once I got it home, I microwaved it for two minutes and into the oven at 150-degrees centrigrade for 10 minutes. It had the perfect crust, and the savouriness enhances the sweetness of the potato. This would be the perfect side or a meal.
Currently Garden Club happens on Tuesday and Thursday morning, after the gates are open. We meet at the bubblers on the Churchill Avenue side of the school. There is also Garden Club for Stage 3 on Friday, who are completing their Pope Francis Award. This is a priority for Stage 3, however anyone is welcome to join if there are extra jobs. Garden Club is FREE to join. Learn to be a lateral thinker with limited resources. Enjoy first pick after harvest and see fascinating creatures.
