Specialist Snapshot

This term in the Auslan classroom, Grade 5 and Grade 6 students have been diving into the expressive world of depicting signs and constructed action—two essential elements of visual communication in Auslan.

Depicting signs (DS) allow students to represent people, objects, and movements in space, helping them tell stories or describe events in vivid detail. Whether it's showing how a ball rolls across the floor or how someone climbs a ladder, students are learning to "show" rather than "tell."

Constructed action (CA), on the other hand, involves students taking on the role of a character to act out their movements, facial expressions, and emotions. It brings signing to life, making their communication more engaging and dynamic.

Through games and storytelling exercises, students have been practicing these techniques with growing confidence. The classroom has been full of energy as students explore how to use their hands, bodies, and faces to tell rich, visual stories in Auslan.
