Year 8 Girls Badminton Team Claim Title
Our Year 8 Girls Badminton team won the Upper Hume Championship last Friday (June 27th) at the Wodonga Sports & Leisure Centre.
The team (Mille Bosley, Bella Boulton, Paige-Lee Dummett, Ellouise Jones, Paige Tanner and Ellie White) went undefeated with a 4-0 record, coached by Sandy "Newmo" Newman.
They defeated Grace Christian College Wodonga 4-2 (100-86), both Wodonga Middle Years College teams (Huon 6-0, 126-78 and Felltimber 5-1, 120-61), and won a nail-biter against Victory Lutheran College 3-3 (114-112).
The title was clinched in an epic Doubles rubber against Victory, with Paige-Lee Dummett and Ellouise Jones saving multiple match points to eventually triumph 29-27.
Wangaratta Rovers and Tigers footballer Dummett was the star, winning all eight of her matches on the day as the #2 seed. It’s her 2nd Upper Hume title in a month, after winning the Cross Country (by almost a minute) at Dederang in May.
The girls will now play at Hume Region in Shepparton in August, for a place in the Top 8 at the State Championships. If they win in Shepparton, they will become our 4th Badminton team in 4 years to make it to State.
Our Year 7's (Macy Boschetti, Joni Cornhill, Daisy Datson, Evie Fisher, Michelle Keenan and Ava Penney) finished Runner-Up with a 4-1 record at their first ever tournament, “sweeping” three schools 6-0 and winning another 5-1, but falling to champions Grace CC, whose players made it to State last year (when Grade 6s playing in the Year 7 comp).
It was interesting to watch Boschetti prove a natural striker of the shuttle. Her great grandfather is Tennis legend Rex Hartwig, twice a Grand Slam singles finalist (US Open and Australian Open 1954), and 5 times a Doubles Champion (2x Wimbledon, 2x Australian Open, 1x US Open).
Our Intermediates (Ruby DeFazio, Kaity Ford, Inanay Gilson, Lillian Hooper and Ruby O'Kane) were 3rd with a 4-2 record, and our Seniors (Ruby Barnard, Aatahua Christie, Indi Elliott, Miley Heenan, Alanna Hepburn, Angela Keenan and Emily McCullough) were great sports., made up of all Year 10s (and one Year 9) willing to play up a level against Year 11 and 12's.
Thanks to all players (including the two days of tryouts and a full week of training at both break times. Also to Sandy Newman for coming along on a great day out for the school.
