Alumni Career Insight Sessions: Cameron Cryer & Harrison Coatsworth Share Their Journeys

Wangaratta High School was thrilled to host two inspiring alumni this June, each bringing unique experiences and valuable life lessons to our current students.

Cameron Cryer – Class of 2019

On Friday, 6th June, WHS welcomed back Cameron Cryer, a proud graduate of the Class of 2019 and now a Seamanship and Small Arms Specialist / Boatswain’s Mate in the Royal Australian Navy. Cameron’s journey since graduation has been nothing short of remarkable. From working full-time and volunteering with the CFA, to enlisting in the Navy and serving aboard the HMAS Brisbane—a Hobart Class Guided Missile Destroyer—his story captivated students.

Cameron spoke candidly about life at sea, answering curious questions about sleeping arrangements, showering routines, and deployment durations. He also shared insights into his training, daily responsibilities, and the skills required to thrive in the ADF. The session, attended by VCE VM and Year 9 students, offered a rare glimpse into military life and the diverse pathways available after high school.

Harrison Coatsworth – Class of 2017

On Tuesday, 17th June, Harrison Coatsworth, General Manager at A1 Tyrepower Wangaratta, corporate sponsor and Wangaratta High School graduate of 2017, visited Michelle Wilson’s VCE VM class. Harrison’s message was clear and powerful: “Get out there and have a go.”

Reflecting on his own challenges during school, Harrison shared how work experience at his family’s business helped him discover his passion and purpose. He emphasised the importance of goal setting, trying different career paths, and staying motivated through daily reflection and physical activity—he trains for triathlons and ends each day by asking himself, “What are three good things that happened today?”

Harrison also offered practical advice on resume writing, job opportunities at Tyrepower, and fostering a positive work environment, including monthly staff outings. One of Harrison’s favourite quotes “Your health is your wealth,” was shared with students to leave a lasting impression.

Looking Ahead These alumni sessions are part of WHS’s ongoing commitment to connecting past students with current learners, fostering inspiration, and showcasing
