THE SCIENCE OF READING

Did you know a third of our children can't read properly?

A new approach to reading is revolutionising the education system and it is about time.

I am excited that we have access to a learning program that focusses on phonemic awareness and the explicit teaching of phonics. The implementation of this program is based on the most recent research in how children learn best.

The Prep and Year One / Two classes are working with a program called Little Learners Love Literacy. This program teaches reading in an explicit and sequential way.

You may have heard of 'decodable' readers, where students are required to 'decode' the sound, rather than to use visual cues or to 'guess' the word. The school has recently purchased a vast number of decodable texts to support the program within the classroom.

This very short article by the Grattan Institute explains more about the 'science of reading' for those who would like to learn along with us! Happy Reading!
