Term 1 - Week 6

Welcome to Week 6,

Year 6 Leadership Day

As outlined in last week's newsletter, on Monday I had the honour of supporting our Year 6 Student Leaders at the Halogen Young Leaders Day in Sydney. This wonderful opportunity highlighted the leadership skills of learning and determination.

While there were so many memorable and engaging aspects to the day, one particular theme continued to strike me. All our inspirational speakers had something in common; they had failed and failed a lot.

Sometimes, when we the public see the final product, we forget the journey. Each time our speakers ‘failed’ they understood that they were a learner and their perceived failure had provided them with an opportunity to learn. This is in stark contrast to a victim, who when failing instead looks for excuses.

What did all our leaders have in common? Not one of them was the fastest, strongest or most intelligent. All of them had determination and thrived on learning … they were all amazing learners!

While our badge wearing leaders were in Sydney, our other Year 6 leaders enjoyed a fantastic day of leadership development at school. Check out the Grade spotlight, Year 6, for a highlights video and wrap of this event.

Open Learning Spaces

Tomorrow morning we welcome our Primary (Yrs 3-6) parents to the first Open Learning opportunity for the year.

To ensure another successful session, please:

  • Respect the timings. Staff and students will be required at the 8.45am morning assembly.
  • Respect these sessions are not Parent-Teacher meetings. Teachers will be in the learning spaces to support participation, though will not be expected to answer questions on your child’s academic achievement, growth or wellbeing.
  • Remember every day at St Nicholas is an opportunity for a Parent-Teacher Meeting. If you would like to meet with your child's teacher, please reach out to them and arrange a mutually convenient time.
  • Respect the privacy and dignity of all students. Enjoy the opportunity to look at your child's learning, though refrain from comparing it to peers.
  • Respect the learning spaces. Please understand the learning spaces are fluid and places of work. Our students and staff take great pride in their learning spaces, though also understand learning is not always pretty. Quality learning can be messy.
  • Respect all staff by only visiting the open spaces of your Primary aged child:

For those parents who are interested, Tim Unwin (St Nicholas Mathematics Specialist Teacher), will be holding a short parent information session in the Auditorium at 8.45am- immediately after closing the learning spaces to our parents. The aim of this session is to help educate our parents in the teaching and learning of ‘Mathematical Reasoning’ at St Nicholas.

We look forward to welcoming our parents of Infant (K-2) children into the Infant’s learning spaces on Friday 15th March

Colour Run

A reminder to please support our Colour Run coming up on Friday 22nd March. More information can be found on Compass or through the PT&F Tab on this newsletter.

Have a great week
