Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Dot Day
Part of PBL involves the recognition of students doing the right thing and to acknowledge and reward students. GSPS use dots that they can earn when doing the right thing around all areas of the school. Students can spend their dots throughout the term at the ‘Dot Café’. There are a variety
of tangible rewards and experiences available for purchase. At the end of each term, we have a celebration afternoon called ‘Dot Day’. Students get to spend the dots they have earnt and saved throughout the term on an activity. Students will be asked to provide feedback and suggestions regarding the activities. It is an excellent afternoon that all students and staff get to participate in. ‘Dot Day’ is on Wednesday the 27th of March. Please see the Dot Day Poster for term 1.
Lessons
Our PBL lessons are data-driven and based on the needs of our students.
Week 9 - Zones of Regulation
Week 10 - School Holiday Safety
Zones of Regulation
Everyone continually works on regulation, whether we are aware of it or not. We all experience circumstances that can test our limits. If we recognise when we are becoming less regulated, we can do something about it to manage our feelings and get ourselves to a healthy place. This comes more naturally for some, but for others, it is a skill that needs more attention and practice. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation, and we teach students various strategies to use when they feel.
How Can You Help?
- Make comments aloud so your child understands it’s natural that we all experience different Zones.
- Help your child become aware of his or her Zone and feelings by pointing out your observations, such as “I can see you are frustrated; you are in the yellow zone.”
- Encourage your child to share his or her Zone with you and help them to become comfortable using the language to communicate his or her feelings and needs
- Model how you feel - what Zone you would be in and what you will do to self-regulate.
- Practice using the tools in our Zone Toolbox.
Respect Program
Students have been engaged in the Respect Program and have been learning the skills required to be respectful in relationships with peers, teachers, staff, siblings, parents/ carers and the general community.
To have healthy, respectful relationships, we need to know what respectful behaviour looks like.
Here are some examples of how to show respect to others:
- be a good listener
- understand someone’s point of view
- express your needs and wants in a direct, calm and respectful way
- respond in a timely manner if someone requests something
- acknowledge what others do well
- let people know you appreciate them
- if someone shares something intimate and personal with you, keep it private
- emphasise someone’s strengths, not their weaknesses
- ensure your humour is sensitive to others’ feelings and avoid embarrassing them
- speak directly with others, don’t talk behind their back
- allow someone space if they need it.
Respectful relationships help students feel safe, encouraged, valued, understood and accepted. As parents and carers, it is our responsibility to model respectful relationships.
