Library News
We are open
The library is open 8am to 5pm on school days
A big welcome to the Year 7 cohort of 2024 and to our returning students. The MGSC library is a welcoming third space for students to spend time in studying or reading. There are over 15,000 print books for loan and a digital space which is accessed via the Library home page where students will find curated online resources to assist with assignments and research. These resources include links to the Digital Edition of The Age Newspaper and Media websites, Issues in Society periodicals, ClickView video catalogue, age appropriate Reading Lists, Student Book Request form, Study Guides and Journal Databases. The library home page is accessed through the school intranet.
Year 7 Induction and Scavenger Hunt
Over the first couple of weeks the library hosted an induction session for all year seven classes. Students were introduced to library spaces and the digital and print collection, before setting off on a scavenger hunt. The ‘Scavenger Hunt’ is a creative exercise with the purpose of familiarizing students with library spaces, the large physical collection of books available for borrowing and to demonstrate the electronic resources available for research so that they are able to navigate these spaces independently. The session wrapped up with students borrowing their first library book which will be used in their Wider Reading assignment and presentation later in Term 1.
Book Club
The MGSC Library has a lunchtime Book Club twice a term. Students who love to read are encouraged to come along and connect intellectually with like-minded peers. Every term, book club members suggest two titles to read and discuss with the library providing multiple copies for students to borrow. An invitation to join and get onto the mailing list was sent out earlier in the term, but students are welcome to drop by the library or email library@mgsc.vic.edu.au at any time with details of their name and class to join.
Students met last week to discuss their holiday reading and to select this term’s books - Loveless by Alice Oseman and Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Loveless is a story in the ‘Relationships’ genre with themes of identity, friendship, love and self-acceptance, while Good Omens is a humorous ‘Fantasy’ novel about good and evil and a prophecy about end of the world. On Monday 25 March, Book Club will reconvene again so that students can share their insights and ideas with each other about both books.
Library Book Mark Competition
Currently, there is a Library Book Mark Competition, open to all students. Entries can be hand drawn (submit to the library desk on an A4 sheet of paper) or digitally created (emailed as an attachment PDF, JPG, Canva link to library@mgsc.vic.edu.au). As a guide/template, use size 5cm x 15cm. Entries close 1 March, 2024. Winning book marks will be printed for students to use all year.
We have received many colourful and creative entries which are now on display in the library foyer. Thank you to all of those students who have entered – and good luck.
