Good Afternoon Parents Students, Staff and Friends of Derinya,

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and acknowledge all the fabulous women in our lives. This year’s theme is around inclusion which presented a great opportunity for us to talk to the children about kindness and ensuring no one is left out.

Commonfolk

Many thanks to Sam Keck who came along to assembly today to talk about sustainability and his wonderful café and coffee business. Sam launched an exciting competition where the children can design a label for the coffee which will be sold through the Little Bean Café. The design needs to be reflective of at least one of our Derinya values which include: friendship, humour, responsibility, optimism and resilience, respect and integrity. Commonfolk are very generous sponsors of the Little Bean and DACE our annual art show and we are very grateful. More information about the competition still to come. Please see more information below.

Colour Run

Today we also celebrated the incredible efforts of our community with the recent Colour Run. With a total of $55734.15, we couldn’t be more grateful. The event itself was a fun day and a lovely way to come together as a community.

Japanese Junior Ambassador Program

A huge congratulations to Jack Ramsay on being selected to represent Australia as a Junior Ambassador at the annual Asian Pacific Children’s Convention in Japan. Jack applied via written application and interview at Derinya and was nominated to represent our school at the next stage of the selection process.  Jack was invited to a selection day with other Victorian children which included activities and a one-on-one meeting. Jack was very excited to receive a call informing him that he was a successful applicant. Jack will now travel to Japan in July along with three other students from different schools. This will include an international camp, homestay and school experience. What an amazing opportunity and how fortunate are we to have such a wonderful young person representing both Derinya and Australia. Well done, Jack, we look forward to hearing all about your adventure!

It’s Not OK to be Away

Regular attendance at school is essential and has a long-term impact on learning achievement and future success. If your child is anxious or experiencing challenges that are making it difficult to come to school, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our wellbeing team to include Mr Cory Stevens cory.stevens@education.vic.gov.au or Mrs Nikki Trevaskis Nicole.trevaskis@education.vic.gov.au. Keeping your child home when unwell is appreciated.

Healthy Lunch Boxes

A healthy and nutritious lunch can have a significant effect on children’s wellbeing and their learning. If you would like some ideas to support with this please check out this website https://healthylunchbox.com.au/. A reminder that it is preferred that nuts and nut products are not sent to school and that nude food is appreciated.

MyMtEliza Fun Run

A reminder that the My Mt Eliza Fun Run is coming up on Sunday 17th March. This is a great family event and wonderful fundraiser to support research around blood cancer. Further information can be found https://mymounteliza.org.au/

NAPLAN and assembly next week

Next week our year 3 & 5 students sit the NAPLAN tests. These will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. To support the best possible conditions for these tests to be held, assembly next week will be held at 2:30pm in the stadium.

Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend.
