Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

We congratulate our Indigenous Support Officer, Kierran Moseley who was selected and played in the NRL Indigenous All Stars team in Townsville last Friday night. The boarders were amazed at this impressive achievement and it was great bringing our whole boarding community together in the Draney Theatre on Friday night to watch the game and cheer Kierran on. As well as being a very talented rugby league player Kierran is doing a wonderful job of supporting our Indigenous students in a role which he only started in a month ago. We look forward to Kierran’s ongoing contribution to Marist College Ashgrove.

This week we reach the halfway point in the term and hopefully, all boys can look back over their first month at school and be happy with what they have done to this point. For the boarders, this coming weekend is a Boarders’ Free Weekend with a student-free day on Monday. Whilst our dorms will remain open and supervised over the weekend for those who are staying in, many boys will be planning a three-day break away with family or friends. Boarders are able to return to school by 8:00pm on Monday to maximise their time away. It is an expectation that boys who are part of a Marist sporting team meet their commitment and play their game this Saturday. Taking leave for the long weekend is not a reason to let their team down. Parents/guardians of boarders are asked to submit leave no later than Thursday so that our Boarding team can plan activities knowing the number of boys who will be staying in.

Planning is well underway for an event that we are hosting again this year. The Marist College Ashgrove Boarders’ Touch Football Tournament is in its third year and will be held on our ovals on Sunday 24 March. This event continues to grow under the leadership of Blair Whitlock and we have received tremendous interest from schools keen to participate. We are expecting every boarding school in South East Queensland to be playing, and in addition, we have received interest from schools as far afield as Rockhampton and Armidale. It’s looking like there will be well over 1,000 boarding school students here on the day and it should be a great celebration of boarding for all involved. We look forward to hosting this event and making it a great experience for all involved.

In closing, I wanted to plug our Marist Boarding Instagram page and I hope you are following it. It is great to share the life of our boarding community with photos and videos and it also aims to connect boys, parents, staff and others.
