Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last Thursday saw our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival in the Marist Pool. It was a great day of competition with a focus on giving all students an equal opportunity to represent their house and earn points. The short 90-minute nature of the carnival for two cohorts at a time allowed us to run unlimited freestyle and breaststroke races, a couple of fun novelty events also with mass participation and a “King of the Pool” race for every cohort highlighting our best swimmers. In the freestyle alone we often had over 20 races, meaning 160 boys were swimming in the cohort.

Thank you to the staff who were involved throughout the day either on duty, supervision in the stands or supporting the boys in their houses. Well done to our student leaders who were outstanding on the day in encouraging and supporting their peers throughout the day.

Congratulations to Ignatius House who took out the carnival.

Last weekend was a washout across the AIC in cricket and AFL after the heavy downpour on Friday morning, at Ashgrove, we had over 200mm in 10 hours. We did manage to play a full round of volleyball matches against Iona. The highlight was the five-set marathon in the firsts, where huge and raucous support was determined to help the boys overcome a loss to the same opposition in a trial a month ago. The Marist boys were gallant, leading 1-0 and 2-1 before going down bravely in the fifth in a match that could have gone either way.

This weekend we take on St Peters Lutheran College in our Term 1 sports of AFL, cricket and volleyball and it is our age championship for swimming in another big weekend for sport. This weekend’s cricket fixtures with St Peters are in support of the Jane McGrath Foundation’s “Pink Stumps Day”. I encourage all supporters to wear pink on the day and get behind a great cause.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

We will attempt to train and play all games.

Should the weather be inclement, a decision will be made by 6:00am for morning training sessions and 2:30pm for afternoon training sessions. A decision for whether game days will proceed will be communicated by 6:30am. Where we do not have control over a venue, such as Marchant Park, we will communicate as soon as we have the information.

All communication around wet weather and cancellations will be via the Marist College App.

Registration Process

All players who want to play a sport must register on Student Café during the sign-up period in the term before the AIC competition occurs. Parents need to approve this through the Parent Lounge.

It is vitally important that all players sign up. We have to nominate team numbers to the AIC and recruit suitable coaches before we start trials. The information we use to do this is the numbers per cohort we see signed up for each sport.

Boys who have not signed up during the registration period will not be guaranteed an opportunity to participate.

Signing Up

Sign in to Student Café; select Extra Curricular; select Sign-up Available; choose the sport you want to play and complete any additional fields as required.

Parent Approval

Marist Old Boy – Queensland Cricket Debut

Congratulations to 2016 (Gilroy) Old Boy Mr Dylan McLachlan, who debuted for Queensland last week in the Marsh One Day Cup game against South Australia. The wicket-keeper batsman was second top scorer for the Bulls with 44 off 77 balls.

The 25-year-old McLachlan made his 2nd XI debut for Queensland last month in the win over WA in Perth and played practice games for the Brisbane Heat Academy side prior to the KFC Big Bash League. McLachlan, who has First Nations heritage through the Kamilaroi people whose traditional lands encompass central northern NSW and western Queensland, toured Vanuatu with the Australian Indigenous team last year. He has been a regular starter in the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team, which competes at the National Indigenous Cricket championships in Alice Springs.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

Welcome to this week’s tennis news Greetings, tennis enthusiasts! 🎾

In this week's riveting instalment of tennis tales, we extend a warm welcome to the dynamic coaching duo, Louie Moulders and Jack Thorpe, who have joined our esteemed ranks. Under my watchful eye, they'll be crafting tennis maestros out of our boys, gearing up for the upcoming AIC championships and Super League showdowns. Welcome aboard, gents! Their insight, gleaned from being part of the 2022 First training squad, ensures a top-notch understanding of the AIC battlefield. This has been great to see ex-students utilizing the pathway for coaching after school life.

Now, onto the weekend's clash chronicles! In the Super League and Brisbane League sagas.

Our Div 7 team faced a formidable foe. While singles strategy might need a Plan B and C, kudos to Charlie Kelly and Andrew Vetter for acing the doubles teamwork. Keep the effort flowing, lads!

The newly promoted Div 1 team of Oscar White and Will Lambley, swept through with a flawless victory – five sets, five wins. Applause-worthy, boys!

Div 2 witnessed a valiant effort from Indy Headrick and Tom Revis, securing a stellar doubles triumph. Singles strategies will be our artistic canvas to paint on this week, boys.

Special mention to the Div 9 standout, Darcy White, with a straight-sets triumph and Jack Lambley's heart-pounding doubles tiebreaker. A narrow miss, but a stellar effort, nonetheless.

Div 10 saw Cooper Chaseling and Quinton Reibelt valiantly challenging a formidable foe, pushing them to the brink.

In the Brisbane League arena. Henry Lambley and Hamish Davidson showcased tennis finesse, proving that solid tennis is their forte.

Remember, these matches are not just battles, but a crucible for our boys to forge their tennis mettle, preparing them for the grand spectacle that is the AIC season. Terms 3 and 4 hold promises of a new Super League, and we'll be calling forth the tennis talents when the time is nigh.

Rugby Ready Program | Year 5-12

It has been a fantastic start to the Rugby Ready Program. Thanks to all the Year 8 and 9 students who have attended the sessions and contributed in an extremely positive manner. This afternoon is the first of the two Opens sessions and we look forward to coaching the remaining year levels across the week.

You will note the Opens have been allocated two options each week, however, they only need to attend one.

Please continue to read the Marist app for all the necessary details including the program content, schedule and dress code.

The Rugby Ready Program involves a host of measures such as physical preparation, skill development, correct and safe techniques preparing the players for contact, enforcement of game laws, and management of safety issues such as the Scrum Passport and the “MAYDAY” call.

Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and expertise to the program. Marist is fortunate to have many staff, old boys and current students contributing to the rugby program. We appreciate all that they do in creating a safe and challenging rugby environment.

NOTE – Any student competing for a position on the AIC Marist swim team, you will start your Rugby Ready Program in Week 7 following the AIC Swimming Championship. A schedule will be made available closer to the time.

Blue and Gold Squad / Year 10

Over the course of Term 1, many students have been training in preparation for the upcoming AIC season. These optional sessions have been held for both the Opens and Year 10 students.

It has been fantastic to see the large numbers attending the sessions and competing for places in the Blue Squad (1st XV wider training squad) or continuing to train in the Gold Squad and / or with the Year 10 group.

The first internal trial for the 1st XV will be on Sunday 10 March at the Brother’s Rugby Union Club.

Marist Rugby Union – Another Wallaby

Congratulations to old boy and former teacher, Mr Anthony Mathison, who has been formally acknowledged as a Wallaby.

Rugby Australia has recently refined the criteria to determine who qualifies as a Wallaby (see below) -

  • Any player that is selected in a Wallabies squad and tours overseas with the national team is considered an Uncapped Wallaby, even if for any reason he is unable to play in a match.
  • Any player who was selected to assemble with a Wallabies squad and trained with the team in the lead-up to a Test or touring match, during the period of the non-replacement rule in International Rugby is considered an Uncapped Wallaby.
  • Any player in the replacement rule era who has been selected in a Wallabies Test squad or touring match, is part of the 22-man game day squad, but is not called on during the course of the match is considered an Uncapped Wallaby.

This is a wonderful achievement and rightful recognition for a player of Anthony’s ability.

Anyone who knows Anthony appreciates his humility and quiet nature. Whilst Anthony has known of his Wallaby status for a period of time, he hasn’t shared this widely with the rugby community.

Anthony toured the United Kingdom and Europe with the Wallabies in 2004 and played a number of mid-week matches. He is recognised as an Uncapped Wallaby and we acknowledge him as our 22nd Wallaby to finish senior and graduate from Marist College.

Swimming

James Boyce - Director of Swimming

Week 6 marks another step forward toward our ultimate goal.

As we enter Week 6, we find ourselves inching closer to our final destination. This week promises excitement and fierce competition as we gear up for the college-age championships.

This event stands as the ultimate opportunity for our male swimmers to showcase their skills and secure coveted spots on the AIC Swimming Team. Historically, it's been a thrilling spectacle, with athletes pushing their limits and delivering impressive performances.

This year, we're thrilled to announce the return of the King of the Pool challenge, featuring the Top 10 athletes of the season vying for the title of the fastest swimmer in the college. Additionally, we're introducing a new category, the Prince of the Pool, where our fastest Years 5-6 athletes will compete for the title of the fastest primary swimmer.

For those who haven't yet registered, we encourage you to do so promptly through the college app to ensure smooth organisation and placement into heats, especially with the introduction of electronic timing this year.

As we approach the climax of the season, it's crucial to acknowledge and commend all our swimmers for their dedication and hard work in representing the college at the preparation meets. It's been a fulfilling journey thus far, but we're fully aware that the real challenge lies ahead as we prepare to take on St Peters. A special acknowledgment goes out to our Year 12 students for their exceptional efforts in fostering a sense of belonging and support among our younger members. Your leadership has truly been exemplary.

The final team will be announced on Monday 26 February, at 12:00pm via the College App.

I look forward to seeing our boys go head-to-head this Friday, and I extend my best wishes to all our athletes for their respective events.

For any inquiries or additional information, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at swim@maraash.qld.edu.au.
