NAPLAN and OLNA Update

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) begins later this term. The Program assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are viewed as essential for every child to advance through their school life and use in their after-school career. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students participate in NAPLAN. This year the NAPLAN testing will occur between Wednesday 13 March and Monday 18 March.
NAPLAN consists of testing in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. It is used to assess how individual students are performing in these areas and provides government authorities with information about the effectiveness of current educational programs.
The information brochure below from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) covers the main areas of information about NAPLAN. The National Assessment Program is just one part of your child's school curriculum; therefore, it is important to encourage each child to be positive and do their best rather than feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Students have been preparing for NAPLAN in class.
It is very important for Year 9 students to make their best effort and complete the NAPLAN testing. The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) system for graduation requires that all students achieve a required level of literacy and numeracy. If the Year 9 student pre-qualifies through the Year 9 NAPLAN results, there is no need to sit the Online Literacy and Numeracy Test in Year 10.
The following table indicates when each test component will take place. Please note that all NAPLAN testing, excluding the catch-up tests, will take place in the morning.

iPad devices will be provided for Year 3 students when required. It is essential Year 5, Year 7, and 9 students bring their iPads to school fully charged on the day of the test. Staff are assisting students with the installation of NAPLAN browser software.
All students are required to bring a set of headphones with them to school during the NAPLAN period.
Please encourage your child to participate fully in NAPLAN. More information can be obtained by visiting the website https://www.nap.edu.au or by reading the Parent Brochure.

Details of which assessment your child is required to sit based on previous attempts or their NAPLAN results have been previously sent out; however, their report can also be found on SEQTA in the Reporting Section.
There are several ways that you, along with the College, can support your child in preparation for this test. All students can access the OLNA practice site via:
Username: 1333
Password: prac14
All students have also been given login details to www.olna.com.au through their classroom teacher for either English or Mathematics.
Students are being supported by their class teachers to complete tasks that will assist them with OLNA. However, we encurage parents to take a proactive approach to assist their children by working with them at home in the lead-up to the assessments.
If you have any questions concerning the OLNA testing, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College through Reception at 9411 4100 or via email: kathrynt@tkc.wa.edu.au
