SSV Eureka Senior & Intermediate Cricket

On Tuesday 13th February BHS entered 3 cricket teams (Senior Boys, Senior Girls, Intermediate Boys) into the SSV Eureka Senior & Intermediate Cricket competition at Vic Park, Ballarat.  It was an absolute scorcher with temperatures reaching well over 30°, some would say perfect cricket conditions!

The Senior Boys had matches against Phoenix College & Woodmans Hill Secondary College. The team went 1 win (against Woodmans Hill) 1 loss (against Phoenix College), ultimately going down to Phoenix College the eventual winners.

The Intermediate Boys found themselves in a 6-team pool play competition drawing Mount Rowan and Mount Clear College. Unfortunately, the team didn’t take the most of the opportunities presented to them and went down in both of the matches they played. With two loses on the board the team missed out on a spot in the finals.

Finally, the Senior Girls got a walk over when their opponent pulled out of the competition. They will progress to the SSV Greater Western Region Senior Girls Cricket competition on Wednesday 6th March at Vic Park

SSV Eureka Senior & Intermediate Tennis

On Thursday 22nd February BHS entered 2 teams (Senior Girls & Intermediate Boys) into the SSV Eureka Senior & Intermediate Tennis competition at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre. Like the cricket it was extremely hot, only made worse by the reflecting heat off the Rebound Ace surface.

The Senior Girls had one match against Mount Clear College. It was clear very early on that the BHS team would have an uphill battle against a very skilled Mount Clear College team. The girls went down 0 sets to 6 sets, but they had a great time, and the Mount Clear College team were very accommodating.

The Intermediate Boys found themselves in a 4-team competition including Beaufort Secondary College, Mount Clear College & Woodmans Hill Secondary College. The team cruised past the Woodmans Hill & Beaufort College teams but got themselves into a serious match against the Mount Clear College team. The BHS team came out victorious and with sets tied 3 all it came back to games won, BHS were ahead by only 6 games. The team has now qualified for the SSV GWR Intermediate Boys Tennis competition on Wednesday 6th March at the Ballarat Regional Athletics Centre.

BAS Tennis Singles Championships

On Monday 26th February BHS entered 2 students into the BAS Tennis Singles Championships. This competition brings Ballarat’s best school age tennis players together for a combined championship. August Koch (Year 10) and William Koch (Year 9) who have recently moved from Horsham Secondary College to attend Ballarat High School, competed on behalf of the school; they have both made an early impact at the recent SSV Eureka Intermediate Boys competition.  Both of the boys battled through the tough Senior & Junior competitions against some really strong opponents. Sadly, both students didn’t win enough qualifying matches to progress to the finals that were scheduled for Thursday 29th February. Both boys indicated they had a great experience at their first BAS Tennis Singles Championships and are looking forward to next years competition.

SSV Greater Western Region Senior Girls Cricket

On Wednesday 6th March BHS hosted Mercy Regional College on the schools turf wicket for the SSV Greater Western Region Senior Girls Cricket competition, the winner would progress to the SSV State Quarterfinals later in the term.

BHS batted first and made a modest total of 6-118 from their 20 overs, Mercy was then given the chance to respond. The Mercy team was single handily carried by one exceptional student who scored 77 of the 125 runs they scored! Ultimately the Mercy team were the winners by 7, the barest of margins. The BHS team received the runners up pennant (not presented on the day).

Coach Robert Simmonds said it was an amazing experience for him and the students to witness an amazing batting display from the Mercy Regional student. He added that the BHS team were certainly the more well-rounded team on the day but unfortunately couldn’t get the victory when it mattered.

SSV Greater Western Region Intermediate Boys Tennis

On Wednesday 6th March the BHS Intermediate Boys Tennis team headed to the Ballarat Regional Tennis for the SSV Greater Western Region Intermediate Boys Tennis competition. With an on the day withdrawal of one of our students, Aiden Wiltsher stepped up in his place. This was also the first time August and William Koch had played against their old school Horsham College.  The team had to negotiate matches against Trinity College and Horsham College.  The day started off very well against Trinity College where the team won 6 sets to 1. The challenge came against Horsham College where both teams seemed equally skilled. It came down to the final doubles match where August and William just needed to play a close match for the overall win. They managed to secure a close loss which resulted in the BHS team securing the overall win 3 sets 24 games to Horsham College’s 3 sets 22 games.

The team will now progress to the SSV Intermediate Boys Tennis State Championships on Friday 17th May at the Glen Waverly Sporting Precinct. Ballarat High School hasn’t had a team in the SSV State Finals for Tennis since 2019.

Students involved: August Koch, William Koch, James Triantafyllopoulos, Aiden Wiltsher.
