Camp Weekaway Reflections

Years 5 & 6 Camp Reflections

Year 5/6 Camp

By Alexis

Camp Weekaway: A few weeks ago, Years 5 and 6 went to Camp Weekaway. It was an hour and a half drive to Camp Weekaway and we had a fun time talking, singing, and lots more before we got there. We arrived, unpacked, and went in our cabins setting up for the night as we had a tour around the site. There was a volleyball area, Gaga Ball in a small sandpit, a basketball court, and a green area with rocks to explore. We had some time to play before we had our first activity. The activities they had were: Canoeing, Damper making, Mountain biking, Flying Fox, the Maze and Hut Building, and Initiatives. We got into groups with some teachers before we headed out to the Initiatives. It was a fun challenge and we had to use some teamwork. After some time we swapped activities so that everyone could have a go at each of the Initiatives. We had to stop and head back for dinner. For dinner, there were tables and chairs for us to sit on and one group per day had to set up by placing the cups, knives, and forks on the table.

After our delicious dinner, we headed back to our cabins to get our pjs ready for when we took a shower. Only a couple of people got to go in the showers for the girls and boys. It took a while to get everyone through and get together for some time to play some games like Uno, drawing, and more. After the time we had together, we got in our cabins and went to bed ready for the big morning ahead of us.

The next morning we took off in some groups doing different activities for the day.

Canoeing: It was really fun and we played very fun games as we learned to move forward, turn and go backward as you would get wet if you are lucky you could jump in and get all wet which would be very fun, splashing everyone before you had to swim to the shore and drag your boats with you.

Damper making: It was only made out of flour and water and you had to mix hard. Once it is mixed you grab a very long stick and some foil and wrap it around the top of the stick for the damper mixer to go on. Next, you lay your stick near the fire waiting for the damper to get a golden colour. Then you can eat it once it is ready with some jam, butter, or honey.

Hut Building: We had to build huts that could fit everyone in your group as you only had 1 hour and 30 minutes. You could only have the equipment that you can find like trees, sticks, and leaves to make your hut a home. It was very fun as you get your hands dirty with cuts from the trees and splinters. It was interesting to see what the other groups made.

Mountain Biking: We got to the site where we got to try out bikes and see if you can ride a bike if you didn’t you could learn too. We picked out our bikes and practised riding on a bumpy track before we set off on the actual track. We set off on the track as it was very dumpy and it was funny too as people biked into bushes. We saw some kangaroos and native animals along the track.

The Maze: The maze is a wooden, tall maze. There are some games that are very exciting and there were a lot of dead ends as it required a lot of teamwork and memory. The first game we played was collecting flags and going in pairs so they wouldn't get lost in the Giant Maze. The other game we did was the Combination Locks, where participants completed questions to find the combination for the locks to open. After a team opens all of their locks they do some maths to try and open the mystery gift.

Flying Fox: We went off for a hike up a hill to the flying fox site. You need to have a harness before you can go on the flying fox. It didn’t have a seat on anything as you just had to dangle on the harness flying over a lake and down on the ground. It was very thrilling flying in the air, the wind in your face and hair. Everyone that wanted to try had a go as it was a bit scary so you had to hold on for dear life. Some people tried it with no hands as they said it was scary but after you get the hang of it it would be exciting as!

Camp Weekaway

In the second week of Term Two, Years 5 and 6 went to Camp Weekaway for 2 nights. On the day we arrived, we did Initiative activities like Spider Web, Pipe Bridge, Rubber Tyres, and many more. For these activities, we had to work together as a team to solve problems. After that, we had some free time outside. There was a volleyball and basketball court and there was a big field to play football.

After dinner, we had a talent contest. Some of the boys sang a song and some of the girls danced for the talent show.

After that, we went on an evening walk but we were a bit too loud so we didn't see any animals!

We went to bed and for the first time in a long time on camp, we gave some time for the teachers to sleep!

The next morning, we were split into 4 groups. The activities that we did were canoeing, mountain biking, damper cooking, and hut building. On the second night, everyone watched a movie called Super Mario Brothers and the next day before we went back to school, we did the flying fox and the maze. We all went 2 times on the flying fox. If we didn't feel like doing it we didn't have to. After those 2 nights and three days of fun, we went back to school to see some of our parents waiting to see us.

CAMP WEEKAWAY

Two weeks ago, Year Five and Six went to Camp Weekaway and we did lots of activities like damper making, hut building, bike riding, canoeing, flying fox, the maze, and other activities. It was so much fun being in a cabin with my friends and doing so many activities. The best activity was definitely canoeing and the games like getting the rubber ducks out of the water and keeping them on your canoe and trying not to let other people knock them off.
