Drama

The curtain on Drama at MGC for 2025 has nearly gone down.

It has been a fabulous wrap-up for MGC Drama students for 2025. Exams are finished, performances are completed and the last professional performance have been attended.

The Year 12 students presented their solo performance exams to panels of examiners on earlier in the term. There was a wonderful array of characters presented include:

  • Cruella de Vil
  • Marie Antionette
  • Hush (from Possum Magic) the Children’s Storybook Character)
  • Frederick Federici the Theatre Ghost
  • Agent 86 (yes, of “Get Smart” fame)
  • The Advertising Agent
  • Oiwa the Japanese vengeful ghost
  • Professor Flitwick (Harry Potter fame)

See if you can work out which student is representing which character – there are a few double-ups.

Meanwhile Year 9 10 and 11 students performed for family and friends on Wednesday the 5th of November.

Year 11 Drama“The Watched”

The Watched serves as a warning to those who open their lives on the current digital landscape. Lines are blurred between being a voyeur and observed by a critical yet unseen audience.

A random sample of people in a Dystopian universe known as, The Watched, are brought to a “rehabilitation facility” to be examined. Every move, every decision, every conflict is monitored by unseen “Watchers” who treat their confinement as entertainment.

As the “Survivors” adapt to their artificial environment and question their reality, something shifts: the “Watchers” begin to blur the lines between their observation and entertainment. Obsessed with the drama unfolding before them, their own world, once secure and detached, begins to unravel.

Year 10 Drama – “The Cost of Fashion”

Year 10 Drama students have been exploring how to construct performance work using Dramatic Elements. Their stimulus, Fashion, prompted the central question: “What is the cost of fashion?”

Through their devised performances, students investigate the fast fashion industry and its impact on individuals and the planet. Using a range of dramatic conventions, these pieces aim to engage audiences in a thought-provoking reflection on consumerism, personal responsibility, and sustainability.

Year 9 Drama

“Teenage Stereotypes”

Year 9 Drama students have been exploring the idea of stereotypes — how they can both highlight misconceptions and reveal uncomfortable truths.

Using the provocation: “Teenagers are everything we love to hate… vain, naïve, and influenced by everything from social media to their peers,” students created a series of short performances examining and challenging common perceptions of teenage identity. Their work draws attention to the humour and harshness of these labels while encouraging audiences to question the stereotypes we so easily accept. They then created a few stereotypes of their own:

“Teenage girls are witches, snitches and boy-crazy bitches” along with  “Teenage boys are cocky and they smell”. (All stereotypes – remember!)

As we approach the end of the year, our Year 7 studentshave been entertaining lunchtime audiences with their whole–class performances. This semesters classes of Year 7 performances students have been amazing with their creativity and vast demonstration of talent. Well done everyone.
