Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: We are aiming to learn all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.
Ideas to practice: You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.
Inquiry: Week 7 will be a time to reflect, review and revise. Students will think about how to improve their business from a variety of perspectives and plan ahead for a shortened time of trading in Week 8. This will involved reduced times of trading and therefore stalls will not need to be fully restocked.
Please let the teachers know if your child needs support in class.
Christmas Concert - Friday 28th November
Our Christmas concert is fast approaching. Please remember that this is a school event and it is expected that students are present. For this amazing event, we ask the following;
Children are dropped to the classroom at 6:45pm
Children are dressed in green top/dress and green skirt or plain shorts/pants
Year 6 Graduation Dinner: Wednesday 26th November 2025.
We have sent home more information about our Graduation Dinner at Dimples, Tea Tree Gully Golf Course, on Wednesday, November 26th. This special evening is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and honour our Year 6 students with their families. A reminder that we arrive at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. Your child should have brought home an invitation and further details about the event this week. This is a wonderful night to celebrate our Year 6s!
Business Unit:
Thank you to all the students for all the effort they have put into their stalls. We now take a break for a time to reflect, review and revise. There is an opportunity to restock for selling in Week 8 but there will only be a short number of trading times (2 timeslots) and therefore, stock should be ordered accordingly. The students now have experience with timelines of ordering online and should take this into consideration. The trading is being planned for the beginning of Week 8. We reiterate that fact that all purchases will be reimbursed by each business group who have received $80 from the school. This includes expenses paid by parents because if items are gifted, it detracts from the overall understanding of how much a business costs in start up and beyond.
Please check with your child to ensure they are ready to trade/sell on Monday, December, Week 8.
End of Year:
We have several things that are on the calendar for end of year including our Year 5/6 class celebration, move up morning, high school transitions, preparations for our 2026 Year 5/6 classes and roles. We have a busy time ahead and your assistance is valued. Please ensure you are aware of the school calendar dates and commitments.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s Workshop: Students will be using Reader’s Workshop as an opportunity to read different texts that will inform their understanding of advertising techniques and we will also have time to enjoy free choice reading, to continue to foster their love of reading.
Writer’s Workshop:
Students have begun writing a business journal to reflect on their progress, noting what is going well, any changes made to their original idea, how effectively they are collaborating, and the challenges they face. The focus will be on using clear sentence structures, well-organised paragraphs, and a variety of sentence types. Students will also create jingles to promote their business.
Mathematics: Students have been recording their business expenses in a ledger this week. This skill has been explicitly taught and practised in class to ensure they have a solid understanding. We will also continue revisiting our statistics and data knowledge to prepare students for collecting and graphing their sales data. This will help them analyse their performance and identify ways to improve during the second week of trading. This has been a big area of growth and balancing sales and income/expenditure has been a challenge for some groups. Again, we know that this experience is so important for our students and their experience teaches them.
Inquiry: ‘Business uses structure to make decisions’.
This is a busy and exciting time for our Year 5/6 students and they continue to benefit from some debriefing conversations at home. If you have any concerns or questions about their business project, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We value comments from parents about the areas in which students have needed support. Please chat to us about your experiences or send us an email. Finally, a wise friend once said that where there is tension, there is learning. I think some of our groups have learnt a lot about each other, relationships, working together, fairness etc. What amazing life lessons! Thank you to our parents for your support as sounding boards and facilitators of problem solving!
