NUNGA NEWS

Animal Wellbeing Group

We love our Monday mornings at Greenwith Primary School. We always look forward to seeing Liz and all the animal friends she brings to visit us. We enjoy learning about each animal and the stories of how they came to be in Liz’s care. Through spending time with them, we are developing many new skills. We are learning how to care for the animals, show empathy for their needs, and understand the important role we play in their wellbeing.

Kuma Kaaru Incursion

This term, our First Nations students were excited to welcome Cliffy from the Kuma Kaaru team to Greenwith Primary School. Cliffy guided us through a rich and immersive cultural journey that helped deepen our understanding of Aboriginal knowledge, stories, and traditions. During the incursion, students learnt about spears and boomerangs, how they were crafted, the materials traditionally used, and the important roles they played in hunting, gathering, and ceremonial life. Students had the opportunity to handle replicas, ask questions, and genuinely connect with the cultural significance of these tools.

They then designed their own boomerangs, learning about the meanings behind various Aboriginal symbols and how these symbols are used to communicate stories, identity, and connection to Country. Students took great pride in creating their own artwork, incorporating symbols that represented their families, experiences, and personal journeys.

A highlight of the day was participating in the Brolga Dance. Cliffy taught students the movements and story behind the dance, helping them understand the significance of the native Australian Brolga bird in Aboriginal culture. As they moved together, students developed a sense of unity, respect, and appreciation for the traditions being shared.

The incursion was a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved, strengthening cultural understanding and celebrating the rich heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our school community.
