Ability Day

On Tuesday 18th November, students and their carers came together to celebrate Ability Day. Created by the Dylan Alcott Foundation, Ability Day is a national initiative that encourages schools to recognise, respect and celebrate the contributions of people with disability in our communities. It aligns with the International Day of People with Disability, held each year on 3rd December. Ability Day focuses on inclusion - making sure every student feels welcomed, valued and supported to be themselves. By bringing this celebration into classrooms and assemblies, schools play an important role in challenging stereotypes, shifting attitudes and showcasing the strengths, talents and leadership of students with disability.
More than 30 schools visited the Dylan Alcott Foundation headquarters to hear Dylan Alcott share his story, his advocacy work and his mission to empower young Australians living with disability to chase their dreams and overcome barriers. Students also enjoyed a morning tea and a chance to meet Dylan in person. Attendees left feeling proud of who they are and motivated to keep advocating for themselves and their futures.
Looking ahead, next year’s HERBBBy Week will focus on different abilities, inclusion and empathy, and Mr T is already planning lots of exciting activities. We are grateful to GPS for their initiative, leadership and genuine commitment to celebrating the diversity within their school community.
It was an empowering morning led by a truly inspiring individual!
