Working hard in mathematics!

In Science we have been learning about the different things in the sky such as the solar noon and constellations!

Religion
In Religion, we continued to learn that during Advent, we remember the prophets and people who waited and prepared for the promised Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Year 3 Dance Performance
Thank you to all our year 3 student's families and friends for attending our year 3 dance performance last Friday. The students had such a wonderful time and they couldn't get their smiles off their faces all afternoon.

Mathematics
During week 9 and 10 year 3 are learning about Volume.
Tips for families - Volume
Explore Everyday Containers: Encourage your child to explore and identify everyday containers that hold approximately one litre of liquid. This could include milk cartons, water bottles, or juice jugs. Help them understand that even though these containers may have different shapes (like tall and narrow versus short and wide), they can still hold the same amount of liquid.
Hands-On Measurement: Engage your child in practical activities where they measure and compare volumes using litres. Provide a variety of containers and ask them to estimate how many litres each container holds. Use a measuring jug marked in litres to verify their estimates. This hands-on experience will help reinforce the concept of litres as a standard unit of measurement for capacity.
Relate to Formal Units: Discuss the importance of using formal units like litres for accurate measurement of capacity. Explain that litres are used consistently across different containers and contexts, making it easier to compare and order volumes. Encourage your child to record their findings using the abbreviation 'L' for litres, reinforcing the formal way to communicate measurements.
Use Metric Units in Everyday Contexts: Introduce and reinforce the use of metric units such as cubic centimeters in everyday contexts. For example, when baking or cooking, involve your child in measuring ingredients using metric units and discuss how different containers hold varying volumes. Emphasise that cubic centimeters are a way to measure the volume of solid objects, not just liquids.
Hands-On Construction with Cubic-Centimeter Blocks: Provide your child with cubic-centimeter blocks or similar building materials. Encourage them to construct rectangular prisms of different sizes and shapes using these blocks. As they build, discuss how the volume of a prism can be understood in terms of layers or stacks of these cubic units. Help them describe the volume using simple language like "layers of blocks" or "stacked rows."
Recording Volumes and Comparing Objects: Engage your child in activities where they record volumes using both numerals and words. For instance, after constructing different prisms using cubic-centimeter blocks, ask them to measure and record the volume in cubic centimetres. Encourage them to express volume in words (e.g., "twenty-four cubic centimeters"). This practice reinforces their understanding of how volumes are measured and communicated.
