Welcome to Year 4, 2026!

Our Year 4 students have made a wonderful start to the new school year. Throughout our ‘Positive Start’ program, they have been building relationships with their teachers and peers, settling confidently into classroom routines, and engaging positively with the rhythm of daily learning.

Our Learning – Weeks 2&3

*Practise our typing skills to develop our accuracy and speed.

*Learn the meaning of and how to use words, with the Latin roots fin/finite, puls/pel.

*Punctuate dialogue with the use of quotation marks, question marks and exclamation marks.

*Identify and write simple sentences that express one idea, as well as build compound sentences using conjunctions.

*Build words with the prefix inter-.

Maths

*During our Maths Daily Review, we will be revising mathematical concepts learnt.

*Practise making 4-digit numbers and record them in various ways in our books.

*Explore placing numbers on number lines using what they are close to and halfway marks to guide estimates.

*Round numbers to the nearest ten by seeing which ten your position is closer to.

*Round numbers to any place value.

*Practise renaming 3-digit numbers to work out all the ways these can be made using different place values.

SEL

*Understand emotions that we may feel in response to different situations.

Inquiry

*Identify our personal strengths and interests and name three of them.

*Set goals and plan how we will use our strengths and identify what a smart goal is.

Events and Reminders

Meet The Teacher - Monday 9th Feb - an opportunity to visit your child's classroom after school to meet the teacher and have a look around the classroom.

School hats - please ensure that your child brings their Hillsmeade hat to school. During Terms 1 and 4, students are required to wear their hat while outside. If they do not have one, they will be required to play under shade sails or the wellbeing room during recess and lunch play.

Drink bottles - please remind your child to bring a drink bottle to school daily so that they have easy access during class learning time.

Pencil cases - Please ensure that students bring their pencil case to school for use in the classroom.

Homework

Throughout Year 4, students will be given regular homework tasks. Students have been reminded about our reading homework expectations and how to record their homework correctly. Additional homework tasks may be introduced later in the year.

Students are required to record completed homework tasks in their diary on the day they complete them. Diaries need to be signed by an adult each night. Students must bring their diary to school for checking. Each classroom teacher will specify which day this will occur on.

Reading: Students are encouraged to read every night. Please record the title of the book and the number of minutes read in their diary.

The Year 4 teachers thank you for your ongoing support, in advance.

Our Learning
