Welcome back

The Year 2 team have had a wonderful first week back and are incredibly proud of how smoothly our students have settled into the new school year.

Our first week has been spent getting to know one another, building connections, and establishing classroom routines to support a positive and productive learning environment.

Consistent routines will be a strong focus at Hillsmeade this year across all year levels. Students are learning to line up in alphabetical order, move calmly and purposefully around the school, and follow clear morning and end of day routines. These structures help set students up for success and maximise learning time each day.

Learning in Year 2 (weeks 2 & 3)

In English, students will:

  • revise and extend their understanding of how groups of letters work together to make sounds.
  • read and spell compound and multisyllabic words.
  • identify different sentence types in texts, including statements, questions, exclamations and commands, and explore how these add meaning to a story.
  • locate and read character dialogue fluently.
  • identify nouns, verbs and adjectives in sentences and discuss how these words work together to create complete sentences.
  • combine at least two ideas in a sentence using and, but and because.

In Mathematics, students will:

  • practise ruling up their books and presenting their work neatly and with pride.
  • recognise collections of objects arranged in different ways without counting each item individually (subitising).
  • count forwards and backwards to 120 using patterns of tens and ones.
  • represent two- and three-digit numbers using bundles of ten and hands-on materials.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) students will

  • identify common emotions.
  • infer how someone is feeling by reading their body language.
  • explore kind actions and strategies to support their friends.

Inquiry

In Term 1, students will participate in the inquiry unit Rise and Try, developing resilience, teamwork skills and positive approaches to learning.

In week two and three of this unit students will:

  • Focus on recognising their personal strengths and and practise using positive communication in group settings.

Continuous Reporting in Year 2

Our first 'Learning Task' for Ongoing Reporting was launched on Friday 30 January 2026. Students wrote a response to the prompt "I am in Year 2 and I am looking forward to.."

Different degrees of support were provided to enable all students to participate in the task.

Students were able to:

  • Write independently
  • Seek support from a peer
  • Copy from the board
  • Work with the teacher

Future learning tasks will encourage students to complete tasks with greater independence.
