Year 8 English
Poetry
As we concluded our focus on poetry in Year 8 English, students had the opportunity to write a poem that drew on biblical elements. Isabel and Asher wrote a poem from Mary and Joseph’s perspective about Jesus’ birth, and Emily, Olivia and Ana-Laura wrote a psalm of thanks.

Shining star
A glimpse of what will come
Above the Holy One.
This isn’t ideal
This shouldn’t be real
Our child
The Messiah
The King
In a stable
not a palace.
Laying on straw
not on a throne.
You’re a shining star
A glimpse of what will come.
He is the Holy One.
Isabel and Asher
Give thanks to the Lord,
His face shines down on us.
My shield,
My protecter, my strength.
Steady shoots
Roots dug deep.
A shepherd to His sheep.
Give thanks to the Lord.
Through the dreary downpour,
The Lord calms the storm.
Even if the world bears down,
The king still wears his crown.
Though the world shakes and crumbles,
The Lord will never stumble.
Promises through pain,
I’m reminded again
Of the rainbow in the sky,
The covenant held high.
Give thanks to the Lord
For His hands hold me steady,
Shelters us, covers us.
Though I’m never ready
The Lord is always there,
A pillar of fire,
Protecting us from the liar,
Guiding us through the night.
Give thanks to the Lord,
For he is good.
Emily, Olivia and Ana-Laura
