Year 7 Service Days

This time of year, as school’s all around Victoria are winding up at the end of a long term, it’s fair to say that there’s a lot of movies being played and lollies being consumed. However, last year, Mrs Carolyn Nyhouse had the brilliant idea here at MECS of creating ’Service Week’ for the Year 7s where students could have the opportunity to think beyond themselves and help out members of our community in this busy period such as cooking, building nativity scenes and helping beautiful our school grounds. The elective opportunity I had the privilege of overseeing, with the help of Kim Storie, was for the students to sing carols and perform a nativity scene to two aged-care facilities in Kilsyth.

Whilst the singing was on point and the drama play impacted hearts, the real win was seeing just how well these twelve Year 7 students connected with the elderly residents at the homes. In fact, I had trouble getting them to leave to get on the bus to the next venue because they just wanted to keep talking to them! It’s moments like this I truly consider myself blessed to be a teacher in a wonderful Christian school such as ours.
