Aboriginal Education

Dhnaj Group

We are in full swing in Dhanj Homework Group this term. It has been wonderful to see our students settled in their learning, helping each other and enjoying fun activities and, of course, their delicious afternoon tea provided by our canteen! Last week we were very lucky to have former student, Disaya R who attends Oak Flats High School, come and mentor our kids.

Mudjingaal Groups

Our Mudjingaal groups have had a deadly start to Term 4. This term Mrs Spaleta and Mrs O’Hara are planning some fun activities including cooking and an excursion! Watch out for news to come on Enews and Facebook.

AECG Meeting

Oak Flats Public School is privileged to be hosting the Juborsay Aboriginal Education Consultative Group meeting on Thursday, 26 October 2023 from 4pm. Parents, carers and families are warmly welcome to attend and join us for afternoon tea. As the host school, we have the opportunity to showcase Aboriginal Education at Oak Flats and what better way to do this than through the voices of our students!

We are honoured to have senior Aboriginal Student Leadership Group students presenting the journey that we have been on and our commitment to ensuring Aboriginal perspectives, culture and history are embedded in our school and curriculum.

Acknowledgement of Country Workshop

This term we are thrilled to be working with Julie Street-Smith, Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Student Wellbeing and Support, to create an updated Acknowledgement of Country that honours the Dharawal peoples and lands. In this workshop, students from K-6 will work together so that the acknowledgement echoes their voices and helps to build a stronger, more inclusive school culture.

Aboriginal Education in Kindergarten

Kindergarten is proud to share their Acknowledgement of Country together each day, giving thanks to the Dharawal people and the land where we live, work and play.

We at Oak Flats Public School

Would like to say “Thank You”

To the Dharawal people

For letting us share your land

We promise to look after it

The animals and the people too

Hello land

Hello sky

Hello me

Hello friends

Over the past term, Kindergarten students have enjoyed reading and hearing Dreaming Stories. The Dreaming lies at the core of Aboriginal spiritual belief and the stories share Ancestor Spirits and the creation of earth, lands, waterways and animals. Our students have also enjoyed creating artworks to accompany the stories.

In Kindergarten we plan Aboriginal perspectives in our curriculum in everyday teaching and not only on significant dates or during cultural celebrations. An example of this is during a recent mathematics unit where we took students outside as a way of connecting to Country. Students identified two-dimensional shapes in our environment and then used natural objects to recreate them.

We look forward to sharing more deadly teaching and learning across the school later in the term.
