Careers Corner

As I draft this week’s newsletter, the Year 12 VCE Students are sitting their VCE English Exam.  This term always feels a little strange without the Year 12’s buzzing around campus in their normal capacity.

This term’s focus is tying up all the loose ends.  Finalising VET enrolments and subject selections and pathway for next year with the senior secondary students.

I have also been fortunate to be able to spend time in the year 9 HUBS sessions and support students working on resumes and talk about preparation for work experience in 2024.   Although many year 9s have very limited experience in the world of work, they have amassed some key skills that are valued by employers.  We have students that:

  • have been a part of production at BCC (both acting and support)
  • volunteer within their church and school community
  • are leaders (SRC) within their cohort
  • coach younger students in sporting activities
  • help out with community projects

Don’t underestimate some of the things done voluntarily.  Some of the benefits of volunteering include: promoting responsibility and commitment, communication and working as part of a team, building and being a part of the community, networking and making contacts that can benefit future employment.

Bayside CC will again be hosting the peer group meeting on campus at a day and time to be advised early in 2024.

2023 VET Results

2023 end of year VET results will start to come through in the coming weeks.  Most students’ results are emailed directly to students from the RTO and original certificates and statements of attainment (for incomplete courses) are posted directly to students, however some are sent via the VET Coordinator.  If this is the case, they will be forwarded to students before the end of term.

If you are interested you will need to complete the Expression of Interest via the online link: https://new.parliament.vic.gov.au/teach-and-learn/work-experience/

The following information has been provided by Parliament of Victoria - outlining what the program entails:

Students can choose between two programs, Sitting and Services, and placements are open to students in Victorian schools who are residents of Victoria, and are 15 years or over at the time of the placement. We endeavour to choose students from a mixture of government, independent, and Catholic schools, from metropolitan and regional areas, and of all gender identities.

Parliamentary Sitting placements provide the opportunity to see the law-making process up close. Students will go behind the scenes with the staff who directly support Parliament sittings, to get a deeper understanding of our democratic processes.

Parliamentary Services placements offer a variety of opportunities that can be matched with a broad range of student interests and career goals, including business management, facilities management and maintenance, community engagement and broadcasting, and hospitality.
