Head of Secondary Update

On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th October we said farewell to our ‘Class of 2023’. A huge congratulations to the Year 12 cohort for finishing so well. The Year 12 led ‘Thank You’ whole school assembly had the right balance of being respectful whilst still showing their personality.

We hope that the Year 12 families also enjoyed the final formal assembly later that day, as they took some time to reflect on their schooling journey at Bayside. The afternoon tea that followed in the Trade Skill Centre Café was the perfect place to finish.

On the Year 12 last day, students shared a pancake breakfast together, dressed up in their favourite costume, and paraded around the Primary and Junior Secondary areas on South campus before heading off on an excursion to Melbourne Cable Park.

After a short study period, VCE students commenced their end of year VCAA examination period with English on Tuesday 24th October. It’s a little strange not seeing them around each day but they will always be welcomed back for a visit.

Over the last few weeks there have also been many exciting extracurricular opportunities and important discussions for some of our other students. Last Wednesday the Year 11’s participated in the half day ‘Fit 2 Drive’ road safety workshop which aims to prevent serious injuries and lives lost amongst young Victorian road users.

Students were provided with a unique opportunity to explore the complexities of decision-making and assessing risk now that they are new road users. Our Year 9 OES students, spent a day catching some waves as they learnt the finer details and skills of surfing at Phillip Island, the Year 11 Biology students completed some field work at Ricketts Point, whilst our Year 7 cohort went on an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of their Science studies. Life in Secondary definitely does not sound boring!

An important reminder that we have our mid-term break this weekend where all students are not required at school this Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th November (Melbourne Cup Public Holiday).

If you are a Year 9-11 parent and student, please make sure that you read through the important end of year exam information, including the timetable, that was emailed home last week. These exams will be conducted on Tuesday 14th – Thursday 16th November and will be followed by a student free day on Friday 17th November for Year 9-11 students only. A two week ‘Headstart’ program then follows the examination period for current Year 10 and 11 as they commence their Unit 1 or 3 VCE/VM pathway studies.

And finally, please save this important date in your calendar - Tuesday 5th December, for our Secondary Presentation Evening, commencing at 7pm in the K Block Gym.

Years 7/8 Volleyball

The Bayside team played their first game away against Casey Grammar. They put on a strong performance winning the first set 25-12 and the second set 25-18 to clinch the win in the best of three sets contest. In their second game Bayside hosted SFX Berwick. In a closely contested match Bayside won the first set 25-13, lost the second 22-25 but the girls kept their cool to win the third set and the match 25-21.

Years 7/8 Indoor Cricket

What. A. Game! Nothing more needs to be said!  The Bayside Years 7/8 Indoor Cricket team defeated St Francis Xavier 179 to 73.

Years 9/10 Baseball

In Round 1 Bayside put in an outstanding performance for their first game as a team. Highlighted by Lukas Martin-Rico striking out 5 batters he faced pitching and great collective team base running, they won 13-1, enforcing the mercy rule in the second inning. Round 2 Bayside went up against John Paul College who won the division flag in 2019 and 2022 (no contests in 2020 and 2021). Bayside put up a strong effort, forcing a 4-4 draw after the timed game came to completion.

Years 9/10 Athletic Development

A group of 24 students from the Year 9/10 elective “Athletic Development” have been engaging with a unit around improving sporting performance. The focus of the unit is on analysis techniques and application of biomechanical principles. As a culmination of the principles covered in the unit, students went to the Centenary Golf Course to engage with a golfing workshop. With coaching from golf pros, students worked on their swing and putting skills. Some students were also able to utilise the video analysis software available that provided useful information such as club speed, ball spin rate and angle of launch.

Year 11 Biology

The Year 11 Biology cohort recently visited Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary in Beaumaris. The students had the opportunity to engage with a number of activities to enrich their understanding of adaptations and ecosystems as part of their VCE Biology studies. We were blessed with beautiful weather and the educator reported that he was pleased and impressed by the involvement and contributions from the students. These fieldwork work activities enabled them to practically apply what we have learnt in the classroom.
