In & Out of the Classroom

Incursion with Detective Tom Sherman

Detective Tom Sherman was welcomed to our Law and Order Elective class on Thursday 19 October to talk to us about the police and policing in Tasmania (pictured above).

Speaking about his own pathway to TasPolice, Tom noted his time as an Old Virgilian, a career in the military and only in recent years turning to law enforcement. On a more generalist note, he explained the many entry-ways available, touching on his own time at the Police Academy, where he experienced the more interesting or fun elements (in his opinion) of policing.

Tom spoke about the range of opportunities offered by the force, emphasising that there is no such thing as a typical or ordinary day, dealing with so many diverse areas, such as traffic policing, community services, combating serious crime, and attending to missing person cases, to name but a few.

Beyond this, we also considered a number of contemporary issues, e.g., the equipment relied on by officers such as handcuffs, capsicum spray, body cameras and the like, when fulfilling their jobs, to keep the community safe.
