Primary School News

Mr Michael Connolly, Head of Primary School

Dear Parents,

This Friday presents a very timely opportunity to focus our attention on child safety. As we prepare to take part in our Day for Daniel initiatives, we are reminded of the important role we play in ensuring our boys are aware of the steps that they can take to stay safe at school, at home and online. It is hoped that our boys take away some valuable learning from the day whilst at the same time, raising funds for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. I urge all parents to use this initiative as an opportunity to speak with their sons about child safety and in particular, their online presence.

Last week, we welcomed almost 140 Year 4 boys to Marist College to take part in our Transition Activities. These activities continue this week and are an important part of the journey these boys have embarked on as they transition from Year 4 to Year 5.

Year 6 Technology Task

Our Year 6 boys have been busy designing and constructing tube amplifiers as part of their design technology studies. This week, all Year 6 classes will take part in a lesson where they will visit the woodwork rooms in the Secondary School to work on their projects. Judging by the chatter on the way back to class, the boys are very excited to return to these rooms when in secondary next year.

ASH Dash

Congratulations to all the boys who took part in the Gilroy House ASH Dash this morning. Each Primary class was represented by four runners who battled it out in year level races to take the honours. The team who managed to run the course with the haybale the fastest (whilst keeping it intact) was awarded the win.

This year, the boys from 5White and 6Blue were the successful teams so a big well done to these boys and the classes they represented.

Primary Pastoral Leader – Anthony Graham

It is hard to believe that in 6 weeks, the year will be finished, and the boys will be on school holidays! There are still plenty of learning and pastoral activities planned to keep the boys engaged and motivated until the end of the year.

Day 4 Daniel: This coming Friday 20 October, the College will be celebrating Day 4 Daniel. There are several events and activities that the boys will be participating in during the day.

  • Market Stall: On Wednesday and Thursday, primary boys will be invited to purchase tokens which can be used at the Market Stall on Friday 1st break. The tokens can be purchased using their student ID cards.
  • Free Dress: On Friday, boys are invited to wear red in support of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. If they do wear free dress, they will need to donate $2 or $5 which will go directly towards the foundation and these donations can be made using their ID cards.

End of Term Dates: I emailed parents over the weekend with a change of dates for the end of Term. Please refer to the dates below:

  • Primary Fun Day: Wednesday 22 November.
  • Primary Graduation Mass, Assembly, and Celebration: Thursday 23 November.
  • Students Last Day of Term: Thursday 23 November.

Primary Fun Day: On Wednesday 22 November, our primary school boys will unite to enjoy a day filled with exhilarating activities. This day promises an array of engaging activities, and more detailed information about the schedule for Year 5 and Year 6 students will be shared in the weeks ahead. The central aim of this day is to commemorate a year of academic growth and personal development, with a special focus on our Year 6 students as they prepare to transition from the primary school.

In the primary school we continue to showcase excellent student behaviour through the You’ve Been Spotted Awards. These raffle tickets are given to boys that exhibit expected College behaviours and each Thursday we draw a raffle. Boys can win pizza vouchers, burger vouchers or other small gifts. The Fun Day is another reward for all students to celebrate their time together as well as excellent classroom behaviours. We expect that all students will participate on the day, however, I shared with the boys that participation on the day is dependent on their behaviour throughout the term and adherence to the College’s behaviour. If students are misbehaving in class, playing aggressively on the oval, or require constant reminders to stay focused then they will receive a strike. If a student accumulates three strikes, they will miss out on the Fun Day and each strike will receive an email home. Nonetheless, it is our hope that all students will be able to partake in this enjoyable day of festivities.
