CONGRATULATIONS
This week Croydon Hills Primary School received notification that we are one of the finalists for an award this year. Fifty-four schools from all around Victoria entered the awards, and the judges faced a challenging time selecting finalists across the 8 categories. The judges were particularly impressed by the way we have fostered student engagement and buy-in, and involved the broader community in our initiatives.
Sustainability & Environment
Campus Infrastructure and Operations School of the Year
Celebrating the school that best demonstrates their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Farm at the heart of campus sustainability
Students and staff at Croydon Hills Primary School have worked together to up-grade their on-campus farm, including an orchard that is watered by stormwater diverted into the Frog Bog, a chicken yard, and vegetable plots with innovative wicking beds. The school also diverts 95% of its food waste to a compost system for re-use.
Using a Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant, this 3 Star school turned an unused area at the North entrance of the school into a biodiverse grassland garden, creating habitats for local animals.
Energy efficiency was improved by installing LEDs, and new ceiling panels, while a rainwater system has the capacity to store up to 120,000 litres.
The 2025 ResourceSmart Schools Awards ceremony will be held at the MCG on Thursday 5th of June, coinciding with World Environment Day. Hosted by Costa Georgiadis, the awards celebrate best practice in sustainability actions and leadership in Victorian Primary and Secondary Schools.
Mr Holdsworth and Mr Crook will attend the day, along with four of our student leaders, who will also be presenting a showcase of our sustainability effort before the award ceremony.
Library News
Welcome back to for Term 2. We are excited to be holding our Book Fair this term. It will be held in the Library from May 19th to May 23rd. Keep an eye on Compass and the Newsletter for more information.
We have a number of spare Harry Potter Coles Collectables tokens in the library. If your child is looking for any tokens to complete their collection at home, students are welcome to come and see if they can find the ones they need during Library Club. This is open to all students and runs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the first half of lunchtime and we have colouring in, games and quiet reading activities set up.
