Celebrations of Learning and Community

Semester 1 Clubs Update

Students across Senior Years are continuing to engage in our clubs program. Students are learning new skills and building quality connections with their peers and teachers. Students are encouraged to seek out a lunchtime club throughout the week to engage in positive activities during their breaks. Please refer to the post on your Compass Newsfeed regarding all the clubs running this term.

 Year 10 Work Experience

During the week of the 12th to 16th of May, our Year 10 students participated in the Year 10 Work Experience program. This has given students a wider understanding of opportunities available for them to pathway into post Secondary Studies. We have had some great reports back from students about how invaluable this experience has been with some of them being offered part-time employment at the end of their placement.

Below we have some feedback from students, parents and employers:

Student: Miya A

  • Work Experience was a 5 day program that had nearly 200 Year 10 students participate. We were everywhere, including family trades, schools, medical fields and lots more. If there was work to be done then you could say that a Hazel Glen student was probably doing it. The program was great and students got to try a pathway they may wish to pursue in the future. I had Ms Galea and Mr Davies say that there was so much positive feedback from employers and students. Hazel Glen College is an incredible school and gives students more opportunities than we could ever know and I hope that in the future, it will bring plenty more to the community as a whole.

Parent Feedback:

  • My child had a great week at Work Experience - he got to spend some time with the electrician and made an extension lead and gained experience using the robot machine and basic welding and his work experience employer is considering taking my child on for an SBAT next year.

Employers:

  • Our HGC student completed his experiences working on construction sites in the New Build VSBA School projects for next year. He worked on a VSBA school project in Toolern with Built Enviros and Wallan East with Hutchinson Builders, where he was able to join in with a plastering crew and see how we construct school buildings through each phase of the build. He was an enthusiastic and contributing member of the crew while onsite, and observing the methods we use to construct VSBA school packages. Well done!
  • The Mantra Melbourne Epping Team and I really enjoyed having the HGC student along with her bright smile and terrific attitude, as part of our team.

Semester 1 Exams (Year 10 and 11 VCE Students)

In the upcoming weeks, Year 10 and Unit 1/2 VCE students will be completing their semester exams. Exam Timetables are live on Compass. It is important that all students review their exam schedule and if they happen to notice any clashes, contact Mrs Vicky Oxenham to arrange their reschedule. She has communicated a Google form to students to complete, should they have a clash of exams on their personal timetable.

We encourage all students completing an exam to attend after school study help sessions or Homework Club, which runs on Tuesdays in the SY Library from 3-4pm.

National Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week

On Monday, May 26th, Ms Emma Nemer and Ms Sonia Bilal, along with 18 students from both Primary and Secondary Years, attended the Whittlesea National Sorry Day proceedings. National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors.

On the day, students participated in a range of cultural activities as well as listening to guest speaker Ian Hamm who shared the importance of Reconciliation and what this means for both First Nations people and Australian society.

National Reconciliation Week – Student Activities

This week (May 27 – June 3) is National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared history and work towards a more just and inclusive future.

To mark the occasion, students across all secondary year levels will take part in activities during their iThrive sessions, including:

  • Presentations and discussions exploring the theme of reconciliation
  • A creative colouring activity, with student artwork to be displayed in the school café
  • Music with powerful messages played during bell times throughout the week

These activities aim to spark respectful conversations and help students connect with the meaning and importance of reconciliation.

Thank you for supporting this important week in our school community.
