Flying Start

Following the conclusion of the exams, students will return to school on Monday 24 November for the commencement of Flying Start. This will run until Friday 5 December, where all students will conclude the 2025 school year. During Flying Start, all students in Years 7 – 11 will move up one Year Level and commence their 2026 classes.

Flying Start, or similar programs, are quite common in schools and are seen as beneficial in that they provide a supported and smooth transition between year levels. In our case, the final two weeks of this school year has all students commencing their 2026 timetable with their new teachers (where possible). Routines, expectations, content, skills and understandings in the new subjects is introduced and made clear, with students and teachers using the time to transition. At the commencement of the 2026 academic year in late January, it allows the students and teachers to immediately re-engage in the learning, providing a springboard for seamless academic transition.

We ask that students actively engage in the concluding weeks of the school year in a meaningful way; there is a clear purpose and meaning to what students are required to do and it does yield benefit upon return. We also ask that parents and carers support students to finish the year well.

Acknowledging that many students have worked hard across the year and are in need of a break, seeing the year through to its final conclusion ensures that returning refreshed and rejuvenate can lead to the achievement of one’s personal best.

Learning Habits Rubric-Seeking Feedback

Many families- and particularly our students- would be familiar with the Learning Habits Rubric. All students are assessed against it each term in each of their subjects. Criteria include preparedness for learning, engagement in and application to the learning activities and overall progress.

The rubric provides students with an assessment of their behaviour that underpins their learning. Parents and carers can also gain an insight into what their child is doing in the classroom, with teachers afforded the opportunity to inform parents and carers and guide students to being the best learners they can be.

Within the rubric, the descriptors identify some behaviours that may negatively impact learning, those that are the minimum acceptable standard and those that have a positive impact on learning. The rubric is used as part of the Academic Progress Policy, which is up for review in early 2026.

We are interested in hearing feedback from parents and carers in order to make improvements. Parent contribution is very much valued; as per its first iteration in 2023, there were several suggestions parents made to the rubric that have contributed to its overall effectiveness.

As always, we are grateful for your contribution and look forward to continued support of students and their learning. We invite you to provide your feedback by clicking on the survey link below by Friday 5 December.

2025 Awards Presentation Evening

The St Bede’s College 2025 Awards Presentation Evening will take place at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 2 December, in the Mentone Campus Auditorium. This evening provides an opportunity for all members of the College community to gather to celebrate the achievements of many students across the school year.

As well as welcoming back Old Collegian Austin Warfe (Year 12 Dux Class of 2023) as special guest speaker, we will also see performances from our talented students and acknowledge the excellence displayed by many of our students in a range of endeavours. Students receiving an award on the evening will receive an invite to attend; and we warmly welcome all students and families to attend.

We look forward to seeing our families on the evening and celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students.
