Online Gaming: What Families Need to Know
Many children enjoy online games such as Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite. While these games can offer creativity, problem-solving and social connection, they also come with real safety concerns that families should be aware of.
At school, we respect that every family makes their own choices about gaming and technology use. However, as wellbeing staff, we are seeing increasing issues connected to online play, including exposure to strangers, inappropriate content and addictive behaviours, particularly in open platforms such as Roblox.
What parents and carers should know:
- Roblox is not a single game. It’s a platform where anyone can create and share their own games. This means not all content is screened or suitable for children, even with parental controls in place.
- Chat features can expose children to strangers. While settings can be adjusted, children may still receive messages or friend requests from unknown users.
- There have been reports of inappropriate content and grooming behaviour. The eSafety Commissioner and child protection experts regularly warn that some games can be used by adults to contact children.
- Gaming can impact wellbeing. Late-night play, online conflict and pressure to spend money or 'keep up' with others can all affect sleep, mood and learning.
- It’s essential to supervise and stay informed. We recommend families explore the game together, review privacy settings and have open, ongoing conversations about what your child is doing and seeing online.
Families can find reliable advice and safety guides through the eSafety Commissioner.
Online gaming can be fun and social when used safely and in moderation — but it’s important to be aware of the risks and take active steps to protect children’s wellbeing.
