The Importance of Sleep for Children

Sleep is a basic human need—just as essential as food and water. It plays a vital role in helping our brains and bodies recharge after the demands of the day. For children and young people, sleep is especially important because it supports mental, physical, emotional, and social development.

“Rest is essential.”

As children grow, their sleep needs change, but research consistently shows that a regular, predictable bedtime routine helps ensure they get the rest they need. Whatever activities you choose, try to follow the same steps in the same order each night. This creates comfort and predictability, helping your child wind down more easily.

What a Bedtime Routine Might Include

🌙 Turning off computers, TVs, video games, and other bright screens

🛁 A relaxing activity such as a warm bath, quiet reading, or gentle music

🪥 Brushing teeth and getting into pyjamas

🧸 Choosing a stuffed toy or comfort item for younger children

Bedtime stories are especially powerful. This quiet moment at the end of the day often encourages children to open up, share their thoughts, and talk through any worries. All primary-aged children—yes, even the older ones—benefit from a nightly story. Shared chapter books are a wonderful option as children grow. Many families find this evening ritual so special that they continue it well into secondary school.

“Sleep grows the mind.”

One helpful tip: aim to put your child to bed when they are sleepy, not already asleep. This helps them learn to settle and fall asleep independently.

Sleep also plays an essential role in learning. From new skills taught in class to navigating friendships and developing their identity, children are constantly processing new information. Without enough rest, children can become more forgetful, emotional, and easily overwhelmed.

“Good sleep, good day.”

Creating a calming, consistent bedtime routine is a simple way to support your child’s wellbeing, learning, and overall happiness.
