CELEBRATING FIRST NATIONS CULTURE
News from Bryan Carswell
Indigenous Liaison Officer
Andronicus Petrous, Year 11
WEX is a program to help bring First Nations students to Canberra and provides them with hands-on exposure and information about job opportunities and career pathways in the Australian Government.
My time at WEX is something that I am honoured to have experienced, as it has helped me to learn about new pathways in the Australian Government and has helped me meet and make new connections with people all over Australia.
During WEX I was able to do many enjoyable things and see interesting places. We toured Old Parliament House and and New Parliament House, the National Science and Technology Centre, the Tidbinbilla First Nations Nature Reserve and a student career expo for the NIAA.
WEX is an unforgettable experience and has helped me learn better social responsibility, leadership, cultural connection and career pathways that will help me in the future when entering adulthood.
From Mr Carswell
WEX is an amazing experience, which some of the Saints boys have attended many times over the years. Congratulations to Andron for having the courage to do it this year. I would encourage more students to put their hand up for this and other such activities that are offered throughout the year. WEX is run sometime in Term 4. It is free, except for your personnel shopping and spending.

Welcome Day for our incoming Year 7 students
The College had its Welcome Day on Wednesday 19 November, the day before our Orientation Day. Its purpose is to support our community, including remote and long-distance students and their parents, as they transition to their new school
The day was a huge success with the new students meeting College Principal Mr Glen Seivers, Director of Boarding Mr Brett Toombs, and our Head of Junior Boys Residence Mr Ross McKeown.
Also giving speeches to the new students and their parents were from Year 7, Azu Thaiday (Weipa) and Dylan Coburn (Horn Island). They courageously spoke of their first year at Saints. Jamal-Joseph Parsgaard (Year 11 from Thursday Island), spoke about Saints' traditional dancing group and other cultural opportunities. Many thanks to all the students who assisted during the day.
There are many people to thank for helping to make Welcome Day so successful: the Leadership Team for their support, Mr Glenn McKenzie from Tolle's for feeding us through the day, teachers Mr Paul See Kee for organising a game of dodge ball and art teacher Ms Kathy Almond for teaching the boys to do some lino printing. A special mention to Registrar Ms Stacey Cristaldi for her amazing support behind the scenes that is always perfect and professional.
