Canine Comprehension Reflection – Weeks 1 to 4

Over the past four sessions, students have been working with our mentor Sarah and therapy dog Bambi as part of the Canine Comprehension program. Together, they have explored important social and emotional learning themes while building confidence, empathy and self-awareness.

In the first session, students reflected on their current feelings towards school and friendships, learning to identify and express emotions more clearly. They began to understand how emotional literacy helps them connect with others and feel safe in the classroom.

During the second session, students discussed things they find challenging or worry about, relating this to how dogs like Bambi learn and adapt through structure and routine. They learned that having clear patterns and supports can help manage change and reduce anxiety.

In the third session, the focus was on organisation and staying on top of things. Students explored how being prepared, just like Bambi following her routine, can help reduce stress and make school life feel calmer and more predictable.

In session  four , students explored why change is important and how it helps us grow and adapt. They discussed how both people and dogs experience change and develop resilience through it. The session encouraged positive thinking about change and embracing new opportunities.

Together, with guidance from Sarah and the calming presence of Bambi, students are developing valuable life skills such as self-regulation, responsibility and kindness towards both people and animals.
