Last weekend the Charism Art Exhibition officially opened and was an intimate display of student artworks from across Catholic schools in the state, celebrating their charismatic journeys. This unique event was coordinated to coincide with the Jubilee Year and Trinity College was proudly represented by Year 12 students, Jake Ieraci and Brendan Ribgy, and Year 5 students, Joseph Stokes and Jonah van Someren. Their artworks recognised and celebrated the work of our Christian Brothers’ founder, blessed Edmund Rice.

A religious charism refers to the grace that animates a religious order. The diverse artworks celebrated and paid homage to the various religious orders who have worked with dedication and fervour to ensure that their charisms have underpinned all that has nourished Catholic Education over the years.

The exhibition was held at Chisholm Catholic College and officially blessed by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe. In attendance was the Executive Director of Catholic Education, Annette Morey, Bishops Don Sproxton and George Kolodziej, the leadership team from Chisholm College and invited clergy and nuns, representing many orders.

I’m delighted to announce that Jonah van Someren won the Year 3-6, 2D category and that Brendan Rigby received an Honourable mention in the Year 10-12, 2D category.

Our congratulations to all our entrants and especially to these two students!

Last Sunday, Year 7.8 student Ben McDonough had the opportunity to go on stage for the Telethon closing ceremony. He mixed with celebrities and was able to meet Ronan Keating! We are very proud of him and hope he enjoyed the Telethon experience.

On Monday, 20 October during our English class, we were lucky enough to have rapper and poet, Mark Lloyd (also known as Marksman Lloyd on stage) come to speak to us about his journey through high school, how he got into rapping and writing poetry and performed different songs and poems for us to enjoy.

At the start of the talk, he rapped a free-verse rap for us. To do this he got us to hold up different objects that we had on us or in our pencil cases, and walked over to us, picked up the item and added it into his rap. It was amazing to watch Mark come up with lines in a matter of seconds without any lyrics or preparation. He then talked to us about his journey through high school, and how he held in his feeling whilst he was getting bullied during his senior years of high school by people that he thought he had made friends with.

He spoke to us about how writing poems helped him too cope with the emotions he was experiencing during his hard times. He also talked about how he slowly was able to build up the skill of performing in front of people, starting from performing in small rooms in front of two to three people and today touring Australia performing in front of large crowds. During the talk we were able to learn how writing can help us to cope with and express our emotions through poems and rapping.
