Wellbeing Year in Review: Nurturing Growth and Resilience in 2023

As we turn the page on a remarkable year at Saltwater College, it is with immense pride and joy that we reflect upon the strides made in enhancing the wellbeing of our entire community. The year 2023 has been marked by significant achievements and highlights that underscore our commitment to the holistic development of our students and staff.

1. Pioneering the Wellbeing Referral Process:

This year saw the successful implementation of an effective wellbeing referral process, streamlining the support system for students on-site. Our dedicated team worked tirelessly to create a seamless and confidential process that ensures timely intervention and support for those in need. By fostering an environment of trust and empathy, we've taken a giant leap forward in prioritising the mental health and wellbeing of our students.

2. Whole-Staff Engagement in Trauma-Informed Education:

In our continued dedication to creating a safe and nurturing learning environment, the entire staff actively participated in Side by Side/Berry Street trauma-informed education training. This initiative has equipped our educators with invaluable insights and tools to recognise and respond to the impact of trauma on students. By fostering a trauma-sensitive approach, we are ensuring empathy and open-mindedness within our classrooms, creating a supportive space for all.

3. Strengthened Partnerships with Allied Health Services:

Collaboration has been a cornerstone of our wellbeing initiatives, and this year saw the deepening of our partnerships with allied health services including social workers, family workers, speech therapists, allied health assistants, occupational therapists and behaviour therapists (to name a few!). By working closely with professionals in the field, we've expanded the range and accessibility of support services available to our students. This collaborative effort ensures that our students receive comprehensive care, both within and beyond the school walls.

4. Student-Centred Wellbeing Initiatives:

From targeted lessons on stress management to wellness-themed events for individual year levels, we've implemented a range of student-centred initiatives aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and resilience. The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, emphasising the impact these activities have had on their overall wellbeing. In conjunction, we have developed our Student Engagement and Wellbeing curriculum based upon the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resources, ensuring all students are exposed to the 8 themes of the social-emotional learning program.

Rollout of the Disability Inclusion Framework:

In a significant step towards creating an inclusive learning environment, we proudly rolled out the Disability Inclusion Framework. This framework serves as a guide to ensure that every student, regardless of ability, feels valued and supported and can access the learning within their classroom. By making the necessary adjustments and ensuring these are documented across a minimum 10 week period, the teachers in collaboration with the Wellbeing team can ensure every individual can thrive.

As we wrap up the year, let's celebrate these achievements and acknowledge the collective effort that has gone into making Saltwater P-9 College a beacon of wellbeing. The journey is ongoing, and we look forward to building on these accomplishments in the years to come.

Wishing everyone a restful and rejuvenating break, and here's to more successes and positive wellbeing  in the upcoming academic year.

Warm regards,

Amanda Palombi
