Year 8 Canberra Trip
Our Year 8 students have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed funding of $67.50 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
From November 6 - 10, Year 8 travelled by bus to the national capital Canberra, for three days of learning and discovery. It was an action packed time in which the students visited and experienced some excellent places in the city and surrounding areas.
On Tuesday, they visited the CSIRO Deep Space exploration station at Tidbinbilla, the National Arboretum, and the Royal Australian Mint. The day was rounded off with some nocturnal learning and animal spotting at the Wildbark Learning Centre at Mulligan’s Flat.
On Wednesday, the students visited the National Museum, the National Art Gallery, and Parliament House before going to the Australian War Memorial to experience a Last Post Ceremony at the end of the day, during which two of our students laid a wreath to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in Australian military service. The students ended their day with some stargazing at Mt Stromlo Observatory.
On Thursday, we visited Questacon, the National Film and Sound Archives, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, and Mt Ainslie Lookout. A surprise birthday cake for Mr Tinetti was a great way to finish the day.
“Canberra camp was an awesome experience. My favourite part was visiting the new and old Parliament House. It was very interesting seeing and watching the Senate in session and when we roleplayed a debate that happened in the old parliament house." - Charlize M
“The part of our Canberra trip that was most interesting for me was Questacon, there were multiple rooms that were filled with exhilarating and fun areas for us to explore. We played many interactive games that also expanded our knowledge.” - Max K
"It is tough to pick a favourite part of camp because we did a few things that were super fun but the best one was definitely Questacon. It was really fun to be able to do sciencey things and still be learning but be able to interact and have fun at the same time. There were so many fun activities like puzzles, the drop slide, and other exhibits. Overall camp was amazing and I had a great time." - Harriet D
"The War Memorial was definitely my favourite place that we went to in Canberra, since the museum that we briefly walked past was very interesting and the Last Post ceremony was very cool to watch live and represent our school while watching it in front of hundreds of people." - Riley C
