School of Entrepreneurs

From the SOE Head of School

Dear students and families of the School of Entrepreneurs,

I hope you are all well and looking forward to the Christmas season ahead.

On Tuesday evening we held an HSC Information Evening for our HSC students of 2024, some of which are in Year 9 and 10 as well as Year 12. This was a very informative evening where ‘all things HSC’ were discussed as well as the deliberate actions that HSC students can implement to make the challenging time that the HSC brings more manageable. I want to take this opportunity to thank all students and their parents for your attendance at this event and for investing in the learning of their son/daughter.

As Years 9 and 10 approach the end of the academic year, Year 12 are at the point of their HSC learning journey where the stakes are becoming increasingly high. It is timely and crucial to reflect on the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic in the classroom. Please remind your son/daughter that the effort they put in now is an investment in their future success. Encourage them to finish the year on a high note by staying committed to their studies, managing their time effectively, and seeking assistance if needed. As we celebrate the achievements of the past months, let's reinforce the idea that a good work ethic is not only about grades, but also about developing skills that will last a lifetime. By consistently demonstrating diligence and dedication in these final weeks, our students are not just closing a chapter; they are laying the foundation for future accomplishments. Thank you for your continued support, and let's finish this academic year strong!

Sending everyone well wishes for the weeks to come.

Visit from Nurse Educator Carrie Alvaro - Westmead Hospital

In Week 5, we were fortunate to host Carrie Alvaro, a Nurse Educator from Westmead Hospital. Carrie has had a vast array of experience across many clinical settings including Emergency and critical care. Carrie came to speak with our students from the School of Entrepreneurs about the challenging, yet highly rewarding career that Nursing can provide. Carrie herself has had a career in nursing spanning many decades. Carrie shared many of her personal experiences in Nursing and how this career has given her the unique opportunity to work with diverse professionals such as radiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and of course doctors. Carrie explained that although doctors provided guidance regarding patient care, that there were many instances where doctors were heavily reliant upon the advice of nurses.

Year 9 Academy U: Western Sydney University

Our St Luke's Year 9 Academy U students participated in Western Sydney University's Innovation and Investigation Day at the Kingswood campus. Our Year 9 students did field research and met with leading professors in AI, psychology, creative industries and business. Students analysed data, built reports in teams and drew conclusions  by creating video journals and Future Directions group presentations. Students enjoyed authentic university lectures and experienced a day on campus.

St Luke’s Rubik’s Cube Competition

Over Weeks 3 and 4 we hosted our very first St Luke’s Rubik’s cube competition where students completed four different solves of a standard 3 x 3 Rubik’s cube, and the average speed of their fastest three solves was calculated. This culminated in the top ten fastest cubers across Stages 2 to 6 competing in a Rubik’s Cube Sprint. Congratulations to our two Stage 6 students who competed, Paul Talam with an average solve time of 55.373 seconds and Naida Nijat with an average solve time of 1 minute and 11.735 seconds. The fastest cube solve was from Parv Shah in Stage 4 with an average speed of 23.725 seconds. He also took out the Rubik’s Cube Sprint with a solve of 30.28 seconds. Even Mr Dela Paz got in on the fun - and he sure is a talented fast cuber with a solve time of 48.26 seconds!

Studies of Religion I and II - Kinchela Boys Home (KBH)

On Monday the 13th of November individuals who are in SOR I and members of SOR II had the opportunity to listen to first hand accounts of the devastating experiences of Indigenous KBH Survivors who suffered in the Kempsey Kinchela Boys Home. Students were able to travel to Catherine McAuley Westmead to watch their heartwarming animated film and share their stories.

These experiences allowed students to empathise with the individuals of the Stolen Generation who were taken away from their families due to assimilation policies, stripped of their culture and were replaced with a number. Each story filled us with sympathy and compassion all sharing a common interest of facing challenging harsh and hostile natures. Here governmental leaders thought that the First Nations people would be improved if they became part of white society which was far from right.

We thank the Uncles for sharing these stories with us which we understand the pain never fades. It fills us with appreciation of resources, care and today especially as we can take these into consideration in our Religious Education.

Wicked - Year 12 Drama and Year 10 VET Entertainment

On Wednesday 8th November, Yr 11 Drama and Yr 10 VET Entertainment students ‘flew on their broomsticks’ to Lyric Theatre to see the Sydney production of Wicked. Here students were immersed in the performance, costume, set design, lighting and special effects of a live production. Following the show, students partook in a live Q&A with management, designers, choreographers and performers, to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a theatre, and help guide and inspire their Individual Projects for their HSC. It was a ‘wickedly’ good time for all and students were able to gain further insight from industry professionals about pursuing a career in the arts.

Duke of Ed Update

Congratulations to Anshdeep Thind (Year 9) who is the first Year 9 student to officially complete his Bronze Duke of Ed Award! Anshdeep completed 52 hours of voluntary service, skill and physical recreation, as well as successfully completing the requirements of the Adventurous Journeys. Anshdeep chose to serve as a YCS member, refine his chess skills and participate in tennis. Many of his peers are only a few hours off and will be able to achieve this milestone before the end of the school year. We look forward to presenting the next batch of pins and certificates in the new year.
