Bullying - No Way!
Bullying No Way Week, 12 to 16 August 2024, is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and connects schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying. At St James we chose to spread awareness throughout the week by wearing a touch of purple EVERY day, having a daily classroom focus (Five Days of Belonging), and writing and displaying a class anti-bullying pledge.
Did you know that purple is the new hero colour representing Bullying No Way: National week of action and the the theme for 2024 is 'Everyone belongs'.
When we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It's about embracing who we are, respecting everyone's differences, and standing up together against unkindness.
Belonging means we all have a role in preventing bullying. We're encouraged to speak up and create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected, and our voices are heard and valued.
Please take time to read our class pledges which have all been proudly displayed on classroom windows.
Maria Ruberto - Parent Evening
Wednesday 28th August
This is an evening not to be missed! Please RSVP via Operoo and book the babysitter!!
Maria Ruberto’s work is dynamic, interactive and spirited. Her application of psychology is anchored by research in neuroscience and brain function – and framed by the science of optimism.
A psychologist with 30 years of clinical and industry experience, Maria will be sharing information about emotional responses and ways parents can manage their own and their children’s responses in situations that help develop their resilience. Maria will explore reasons why resilience is critical for their development in the near and long-term future. While Maria will be presenting new information, she will also be making relevant connections to the previous session she held last year at St James.
For those who are interested in a sneak preview, check out her recent appearance on The Imperfects podcast. https://theresilienceproject.com.au/at-home/podcasts/
Term 3 Value - Empathy
At this morning's assembly, we heard some more important information about Empathy from two of our SRC members, Annelise and Hugo H. This is what they said...
Another part of empathy is about being able to understand someone else’s way of looking at a situation, even if you see it differently. We often call this “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes” and it means you see things from their point of view, or from their perspective. Having empathy means you can step back from the way you see a situation and think about how someone else might feel from their side of the story.
Have you ever thought a game was really fun but your friend felt it wasn’t fair? If you saw your friend was bothered by the game and understood she wasn’t having a good time even though you were… that’s empathy. You showed empathy by understanding how things felt from her side of the situation.
Congratulations to the following students who received awards for the empathy they demonstrated over the past two weeks. We are very proud of you!
