Year 3/4 Classrooms

Just like the rest of the school, our Grade 3 and 4 classrooms have been busy getting ready for the school production. The enthusiasm and excitement are evident in their rehearsals, and we think it’s going to be a fantastic show!

In addition to rehearsals, our students have been busy participating in the athletics carnival, with some going on to represent our school at the district competition early next week. The whole cohort participated in a billy cart incursion at the beginning of this week and, as if that wasn’t enough, a large group of Grade 3 and 4 students also took part in the Boite Schools Chorus performance at Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday night.

Of course, amongst all of this, our bilingual learning has continued. Our students have demonstrated wonderful resilience and flexibility as they have navigated the many changes to our schedule and made the most of every opportunity.

We are incredibly proud of the way they have embraced this busy and exciting time!

Incursion

On Monday, the whole cohort participated in a billy cart incursion in the gym. Students honed their communication and teamwork skills as they worked together to build and test billy carts of varying sizes. Of course, they also had plenty of time to have fun pushing each other around the billy cart race track!

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate, problem-solve and, most importantly, have plenty of fun along the way.

English

Our English classrooms have been buzzing with discussions about kindness, empathy and friendship as we continue to read, discuss and write about the novel Wonder.

Students have been learning how to make their writing more persuasive by clearly stating their opinions and supporting their ideas with evidence. Each morning, students have also been practising reading with fluency and expression. During our shared reading sessions, they have been reading with wonderful volume and expression, pausing occasionally to discuss the story and share their thinking. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident readers and thoughtful writers as they engage with the characters and themes in Wonder.

Spanish

Students have continued working on their persuasive texts in Spanish, developing their ability to express and support their opinions. They have also begun researching different Latin American landmarks in preparation for writing persuasive texts about these fascinating places. In addition, students have been strengthening their reading skills through regular morning reading in Spanish. They have also been practising reading aloud, helping to build their fluency, pronunciation, confidence, and understanding of the language.

Maths

In English and Spanish Maths, students have been working on multiplication and division. Their learning has been supported through modelling problems with counters, solving calculations using a range of algorithms, and checking the reasonableness of their answers using rounding.

Students have also been applying these skills to solve worded problems, developing their ability to choose appropriate strategies and explain their mathematical thinking.

Writers in Residence

Congratulations to Valerie, Isabel and Haziq who are this weeks Writers in Residence. Valerie wrote an excellent narrative story, Isabel made a fantastic poster 

and Haziq wrote a very persuasive paragraph. Fantastic work!
