School Concert Next Week

The School Concert is almost here! Foundation students will soon grace the stage and perform their wonderful dances. A great big thank you to our Foundation families for supplying costumes and supporting this big event in our school calendar!

A friendly reminder that Monday the 17th is a rehearsal day in full costume. For details around drop off and pick up times and places, please see the poster in your homeroom window.

The Foundation team have also added colourful bag tags to student school bags with dates, times and venues for next week. Don’t forget to contact the classroom teacher if your child is not attending performances.

English

What an epic week in Foundation English Literacy! Digraphs, Persuasive texts, capital letters and full stops, and rooms full of children showing us they can do amazing things in their first year of school! We are especially proud of the incredible reading that Foundation students are demonstrating. Children are keen to read aloud with the teacher and their peers, to show us how they track words across the page with their finger, and to sound out words using the skill they have been learning from Boxy the Robot – thanks Luke Judd for introducing your fabulous robot to us and showing us how robots learn to read!

Spanish

Hang on a minute, is that the sound of chefs whipping up a meal I hear? Children in Foundation are using this term’s target vocabulary to demonstrate how to prepare a meal. We are so impressed to see them using Spanish in action in the classroom and using the class recipe book so enthusiastically! We would also like to celebrate children for reaching the end of the alphabet and for counting in Spanish so enthusiastically that their English teachers are reporting that many answers in English Maths are often in Spanish! Way to go Foundation students, your enthusiasm is paying off!

Writers in Residence

Congratulations to Violet and Ethan from FAB who are this weeks Writers in Residence! Violet proudly wrote Spanish words with the letter of the day, Z, completely independently! Ethan has written a very compelling persuasive text about brushing your teeth. Well done Foundation writers! 

Maths

Students have been working in shops this week, selling their wares, buying food, and working out change. All that practice with addition and subtraction has come in handy, as students have confidently shopped, bartered, set prices, counted coins, and kept track of bank balances! The strategies in subtraction classes have been most helpful, and we can see children using concrete materials, counting on and counting back, and using number lines to support them as they think through puzzles in the Maths classroom.

Library

We have been absolutely loving our partnership with the school Library this term. Our targeted learning sessions about authors, illustrators, and the Library system has been a joy. It is so fantastic to see students confidently shelving books, scanning barcodes, and checking the spines of books to confirm the author’s last name. Children talk confidently about an author’s catalogue and enjoy naming books by the week’s focus author. A great big thank you to Jess for helping us plan and implement these sessions and choose each week’s focus author to suit our classroom learning needs and theme. Phillip Bunting and Julia Donaldson are now big names in our classrooms, and we are excited to explore works by Davina Bell after our visit to the Library this week!
