From the 1/2 Classrooms

This has been an exciting fortnight for the Grade 1 and 2 students! Last Friday, together with the Foundation students, they performed a wonderful rendition of 'Sing’ by the Carpenters, during Assembly. The students learned the song and rehearsed for their performance during the Monday afternoon F-2 Mini Assemblies.

Another special event over last two weeks has of course been the Olympic Games. The Grade 1 and 2 teachers have put an Olympic twist on learning in Literacy, Maths and Integrated Studies. Our students explored the history and culture of the Games and have been keeping a close eye on our Australian medal tally.

During Applied Maths lessons students explored symmetry in flags of countries participating in the Olympics and designed their own symmetrical flags. Students also used arrays to create an 'Olympic Village of Arrays' and designed torches and medals.

Our literacy lessons centered around two picture books: Olympig and The Speedy Sloth. Both books celebrate 'being a good sport' and persistence. Students made text-text comparisons, sequenced events in the texts, focused on character traits and sorted vocabulary in Verbs, Nouns, Adjectives and Adverbs.

Through analysing the behaviour and language used by characters in the texts, students discussed 'what makes a good sport' and created an encouragement poster for Boomer, the protagonist of Olympig. We focused on developing positive, encouraging language we might use for a friend when they find obstacles on their way.

We look forward to the BPPS Olympic Day on Friday the 9th of August!
