Earlier this year, I was successful in securing a Teaching Innovation Fellowship (TIF) with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership. Through this Victorian Government initiative we have been provided with the funding and professional support needed to foster the development of innovative teaching practices at the College.

The program commenced in Term 2 with a series of professional development and planning sessions at The Academy in Melbourne. There are 24 Teacher Fellows in the 2024 cohort.  All are working on different innovation projects across Government, Catholic and Independent schools. St Mary’s College stands to benefit from the learning achieved by all of these schools over the next 12 months.

This term a group of St Mary’s College teachers have stepped up to form a TIF Community of Learners, that will drive the project at our school. Our vision is to reimagine the way skills are taught and assessed within the classroom. A big part of this project is the inclusion of student voice and agency in the classroom, meaning our students will have more ownership of their learning and be empowered to be the best version of themselves.

The project will initially focus on classes in our Year 6 and Year 9 cohorts, but as we share our learning with our school community we expect ideas to grow and evolve, impacting across the school.

St Mary’s College can be proud to be part of a program that is shaping the future of the teaching profession and I look forward to sharing our progress in the coming months.
