CAPA Hits the Ground Running for the New School Year
CAPA students have been busy starting new electives for Year 9, Year 10 starting new units of work and Preliminary students have also started their 3 new subjects for the new academic year. Students are busy developing creative skills and learning new concepts to develop their creative abilities with some outstanding works created in the first 2 weeks. We can't wait to see what the rest of the academic year brings.
Visual Arts
Students in Year 9 Visual Arts have commenced the academic year with both maturity and creative flair. They have started to show their own artmaking style within the two artworks they have produced thus far as part of “The Motif” unit of work. Students have created a title page design incorporating the elements of art and the application of colour pencil. Australian artist, Paul Boston is of influence in this unit of work, with students emulating his motif of the human head. Students have also produced their first large scale drawing on paper, which will form part of a collection of works submitted later in the semester.
Students in the Preliminary Visual Arts course have commenced the academic year with both enthusiasm and a can-do attitude. This positive approach to learning is already evident in the high-quality 2D artworks they are producing. Students have been utilising mixed-media drawing products to create several detailed pieces. Students have also commenced critical and historical studies in line with the syllabus to develop their knowledge and skills when looking at and interpreting source material and artworks to generate written responses.
Visual Design
Students in Year 9 and Preliminary Visual Design have been busy learning the basics of design and how to use the elements of line, shape, colour, tone and pattern to create interest using a variety of media including pencil, watercolour and pastel. Year 10 is continuing their investigation into the role of the printmaker and creating their own edition of prints in the practice of lino. All levels of Visual Design will be investigating the practice and role of different designers including graphic, product and architectural designers to name just a few over the course of the new year.
Photography and Digital Media Update
Year 9 have started using the DSLR cameras for the first time and learning more about various programs they can use for editing their images.
Year 10 are continuing with digital imaging projects. This term they are learning how to set up a three-point lighting system for studio photography and taking professional portraits. They will then use the portrait of themselves to create a Double Exposure Art Project and Digital Collage. Here is an example of a quick Double Exposure made in Adobe Express with online images by Thanushri.
The HSC photography class have been working in the Darkroom. They have learnt more about WHS issues for safe working practices as a photographer and have been working on a Photogram narrative-based series of images. This term they will also make a pin-hole camera and use it to take black and white negative images. They are learning about alternative processing techniques such as multiple exposures, dodging and burning. Here is poster design by Earl made in Canva and some photos of students working in the darkroom on their photograms.
Entertainment
The two new HSC classes in VET Entertainment have been working on their first cluster task, Safe and Sound. This has seen the first cohort of students complete their White Card and all students engage in Work Health Safety activities. They have since moved onto the audio section of the course and are working steadily to understand the basic setup of a Public Announcement system. Students are all engaged in their new learning and look forward to starting their Lighting cluster next term.
Music
The Year 9 Music class has kicked off the new year on a high note by diving into the World of Classical Music through the life and works of Beethoven! Students have learnt of his fascinating journey whilst developing their musical skills. To add their own creative spin, they will be rearranging a classical piece in a style of their own as part of their assessment task and present this as an in-class performance. Let the music-making begin!
