National Science Week has been a fantastic experience at Mitcham Primary School this year, and the theme ‘Species Survival - More than just sustainability’ couldn’t have been more fitting. Our students have had an exciting time this year, diving into everything from disease-causing organisms and life-saving chemicals to the wonders of photosynthesis and the mysteries of microplastics.
Our Science Week celebrations have been particularly special. On Monday, our students were thrilled to spot two rainbow lorikeets flitting in and out of a hollow in one of our lovely gum trees. We watched with anticipation as the vibrant birds seemed to be preparing a nest. By Wednesday, the excitement continued when two fluffy possums emerged from the same hollow! It’s moments like these that remind us of the incredible wildlife right in our own backyard and the importance of protecting these beautiful creatures.
Our celebrations were also made even more special by the wonderful involvement of our parents. The Fathering Project’s Tallest Tower STEM Challenge was a huge hit, and it was brilliant to see so many dads and male guardians/role models getting involved and supporting their children’s learning. Their participation not only made the event enjoyable but also reinforced the positive impact that male role models have in our students' lives.
A big shoutout to all the parents who ran science-focused rotation activities on Thursday, thank you to Catherine T, Sarah H, Leesa C, Wally C, Ilia C, Tamara T and Putri. From dry ice experiments to permaculture workshops and a planetarium experience, your efforts made the day unforgettable for our students. We’re incredibly lucky to have such strong support for our STEM program at Mitcham Primary School. An equally big shoutout goes to Mrs. Lamont for her outstanding coordination of Thursday’s activities. Her dedication ensures that our students have access to enriching and exciting learning experiences, fostering a lifelong love for science and exploration.
As we wrap up National Science Week, let’s take a moment to celebrate the wonders of science and the role it plays in preserving the incredible diversity of life on our planet. Here’s to continuing our journey of discovery and innovation, both in the classroom and beyond!
Wishing all families a lovely weekend.
